You will join a multidisciplinary team delivering projects across Alberta, from focused renovations and structural assessments to major healthcare, education, research, commercial, community, industrial, water, and wastewater facilities. This role provides the opportunity to lead challenging assignments, shape technical approaches, mentor developing professionals, and build trusted client relationships within a broad, well-established design community.

Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking a talented and experienced Senior Structural Engineer– Buildings to join our successful structural team in Calgary, Alberta. This is an opportunity for an accomplished buildings engineer to take a leading role in the delivery of complex new construction, renovation, rehabilitation, and assessment projects while helping shape the technical direction, client relationships, and continued growth of our Structural Engineering practice.

In this role, you will act as a senior technical advisor and design leader, taking ownership of structural solutions from concept through construction. You will lead or contribute to Quality Control reviews and Technical Independent Reviews, guide teams through complex technical decisions, and work directly with clients and project leaders to align scope, schedule, budget, risk, and quality. Your portfolio may include healthcare, education, research, commercial, community, industrial, water, and wastewater facilities, as well as renovations, rehabilitation, adaptive reuse, and structural assessments.

You will have the autonomy to lead significant assignments while remaining connected to a strong network of structural specialists across Stantec. As part of a multidisciplinary Buildings team, you will bring senior design expertise, practical construction knowledge, mentorship, and sound engineering judgment to projects of varied scale and complexity. Your Key Responsibilities

• Lead relationships with owners, architects, engineering disciplines, contractors, and other project stakeholders to establish objectives, define technical requirements, and support successful project delivery.

• Lead and coordinate structural engineering work from planning and conceptual design through detailed design, tender, construction, and project closeout.

• Develop, oversee, and review structural analyses, design calculations, technical specifications, drawings, reports, and construction documents for reinforced concrete, structural steel, masonry, and wood structures.

• Apply a professional seal to engineering documents and assume professional responsibility for structural work prepared under your supervision.

• Serve as Structural Engineer of Record, discipline lead, technical advisor, or senior reviewer, as appropriate to project scope and experience.

• Lead or participate in Quality Control and Technical Independent Reviews and help maintain consistent application of Stantec's QA/QC procedures.

• Provide clear, practical direction in the assessment and resolution of complex structural design, coordination, and construction issues.

• Participate in client meetings, project planning, scope development, value analysis, risk reviews, and cost estimating.

• Work with Project Managers to develop realistic scopes, fees, work plans, schedules, resource plans, and risk-management strategies.

• Coordinate multidisciplinary design activities and structural resources across project teams and Stantec offices, matching the delivery approach to project size and complexity.

• Lead and oversee construction-phase structural services, including shop drawing reviews, responses to requests for information, site reviews, field review reports, site instructions, and corrective actions.

• Assess the installation and assembly of structural elements for general conformance with the design documents and collaborate with contractors and project teams to resolve site issues.

• Mentor and coach intermediate and junior professionals through project assignments, design reviews, technical guidance, and knowledge-sharing activities.

• Develop and maintain trusted relationships with clients and collaborators and contribute to proposals, interviews, and strategic business-development initiatives.

• Help advance structural standards, specifications, design tools, lessons learned, and technical practices across the team.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

• Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from a recognized university. A master's degree is considered an asset.

• Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Alberta, or eligible for registration in Alberta.

• Typically 10 or more years of progressive structural engineering experience, including substantial responsibility for the design and construction-phase delivery of building projects.

• Demonstrated success leading structural design, coordinating multidisciplinary teams, exercising sound engineering judgment, and guiding projects through all phases of delivery.

• Strong working knowledge and demonstrated design experience in reinforced concrete and structural steel, with experience in masonry and wood considered beneficial.

• Proficiency in applying the NBCC and relevant CSA standards, including CSA A23.3, CSA S16, and, where applicable, CSA S304 and CSA O86.

• Extensive experience delivering projects in one or more of the healthcare, education, research, commercial, community, institutional, industrial, water, or wastewater sectors, including new construction and renovation, rehabilitation, or structural assessment assignments.

• Strong construction knowledge and experience reviewing reinforced concrete, structural steel, masonry, and other structural work in the field.

• Experience with structural analysis and design software such as ETABS, SAP2000, SAFE, RISA, or RAM. Experience with Revit, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office products is highly desirable.

• A collaborative leadership style, strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to build credibility with clients, colleagues, and project partners.

• Demonstrated ability to mentor others, delegate effectively, provide constructive technical feedback, and contribute to a positive team environment.

• Working knowledge of project management fundamentals, including scope, schedule, budget, risk, change management, and quality.

• Highly organized and adaptable, with the ability to balance multiple priorities and lead effectively through changing project needs.

• Curiosity and initiative in adopting new technologies, improving delivery practices, and sharing knowledge across the structural group.
