Salary Band: Band 4 ($56,182 – $84,272 · $28.81 – $43.22/hr)

POSITION PURPOSE

The Fire Services and FireSmart Coordinator coordinates the day-to-day delivery and administration of fire protection services and the FireSmart wildfire risk reduction program for Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government. Working within the nis̓maakukqinʔaała (Always Our Land) department and reporting to the Emergency Program Manager, the Coordinator is the day-to-day liaison with fire protection service providers, schedules and supports FireSmart assessments, community education and fuel mitigation activities, and provides administrative and logistical support to emergency preparedness and response. Program strategy, budget authority, and partnership commitments rest with the Emergency Program Manager; the Coordinator implements approved plans and ensures work is grounded in traditional knowledge and environmental stewardship.

ACCOUNTABILITY

Fire Services Coordination

• Act as the day-to-day contact with fire protection service providers and route service, compliance, or contract issues to the Emergency Program Manager.


• Maintain service agreement records, renewal dates, and compliance documentation for the fire services program.


• Schedule and support meetings with service providers and external agencies, prepare agendas and notes, and track follow-up actions.


• Recommend improvements to the fire services program for the Emergency Program Manager's review and approval.

FireSmart Program Delivery

• Coordinate delivery of the approved Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ FireSmart Program workplan.


• Schedule, conduct, and document FireSmart assessments of homes, critical infrastructure, and landscapes, and log recommendations.


• Apply FireSmart BC and BC Wildfire Service guidelines in day-to-day assessment and mitigation work.


• Coordinate scheduling, site access, and progress tracking for vegetation management and fuel mitigation projects delivered by contractors and land stewards.


• Provide field data and assessment findings to support wildfire risk reduction and resilience planning led by the Emergency Program Manager.

Community Education, Preparedness and Training Support

• Organize and deliver FireSmart outreach, workshops, and community events using approved materials.


• Prepare culturally relevant education materials and communications on wildfire risk and household preparedness.


• Coordinate registration and logistics for fire services and wildfire training for citizens, staff, and volunteers.


• Support youth and volunteer engagement activities in fire prevention and land stewardship.


• Assist with the logistics of exercises, simulations, and joint response planning sessions.

Administrative and Financial Support

• Track program expenditures against approved fire protection and FireSmart budgets and flag variances to the Emergency Program Manager.


• Gather data, prepare drafts, and compile documentation for grant applications and funder reporting.


• Process purchase requests and coordinate procurement of fire-related supplies, equipment, and contractor services within Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government policy and delegated limits.


• Maintain program records, inventories, assessment databases, and activity reports.

Collaboration and Stewardship

• Work day-to-day with the nis̓maakukqinʔaała (Always Our Land) team so fire protection and FireSmart activities align with environmental stewardship values and land-based priorities.


• Participate in working groups and planning tables with FireSmart BC, BC Wildfire Service, Ucluelet Fire Rescue, ACRD, neighbouring First Nations, and regional fire departments, reporting outcomes back to the Emergency Program Manager.


• Build positive working relationships with staff, citizens, contractors, and partner agencies.

Emergency Preparedness Support

• Provide coordination and administrative support to fire and wildfire response planning under the direction of the Emergency Program Manager.


• Fill an assigned role in Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) activations, trainings, and response efforts as needed.


• Perform additional duties as directed by the Emergency Program Manager.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Required:

• Certificate or diploma in Emergency Management, Fire Services, Fire or Natural Resource Management, Environmental Studies, Public Administration, or a related field; an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.


• One to three years of coordination, administrative, or field experience in fire services, wildfire mitigation, emergency management, or a related program.


• Working knowledge of FireSmart BC principles and wildfire mitigation practices.


• Experience coordinating schedules, events, training sessions, or contractor activities.


• Valid Class 5 BC Driver's Licence and willingness to travel as required.


• Satisfactory criminal record check.

Preferred:

• Experience with volunteer fire departments, local governments, or Indigenous communities.


• Familiarity with the BC Fire Services Act, NFPA standards, WorkSafeBC requirements, and Community Wildfire Resiliency Planning (CWRP).


• Firefighter Level 1 & 2, FireSmart™, wildfire suppression, or Emergency Management training.


• Knowledge of Nuu-chah-nulth language, culture, and protocols.

CORE COMPETENCIES

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including delivering community education sessions


• Well organized, with the ability to manage schedules, logistics, records, and competing deadlines


• Collaborative approach with departments, citizens, contractors, and volunteer-based organizations


• Accuracy and attention to detail in assessments, tracking, and reporting


• Proficiency with MS Office; digital mapping and data tracking tools considered an asset


• Comfort preparing clear notes, activity reports, and draft grant or funding documentation

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Fieldwork, site visits, community assessments, and training sessions in outdoor environments and off-site locations


• Participation in EOC activations and emergency response as required
