Managing Editor, CBC Saskatchewan (English Services) (On-Site)
Lead a growing newsroom in one of Canada's most dynamic and rapidly evolving provinces. CBC Saskatchewan is looking for a Managing Editor to drive our editorial strategy, spearhead audience growth strategies, and inspire a team of journalists dedicated to serving a growing, diverse population.
This is an opportunity to shape how the story of Saskatchewan is told across audio, visual, and digital platforms. You will lead the charge in delivering breaking news that matters, driving community outreach, and championing original enterprise reporting that connects.
Your Role
As the senior journalistic leader, you will set the tone for the newsroom. You will:
- Define and execute an editorial vision across CBC digital, radio, and television that balances immediate breaking news with enterprise storytelling.
- Play a key role in developing audience growth strategies, identifying new opportunities to expand our reach and relevance across all platforms.
- Lead the station’s community outreach initiatives, building meaningful relationships and fostering trust with diverse communities across the province.
- Serve as the guardian of CBC’s journalistic integrity, ensuring all content is fair, balanced, and accurate.
- Move the newsroom forward in an ever-changing landscape, encouraging calculated risks, new formats, and digital-first thinking.
- Ensure our coverage reflects the true diversity of Saskatchewan, building trust with new audiences through inclusive, representative storytelling.
What You Bring
We are looking for an empathetic, strategic leader who believes that great journalism starts with an inclusive newsroom culture:
- You are committed to hiring diverse talent and fostering an environment where staff feel safe, heard, and inspired to grow.
- You possess exceptional editorial judgment and can make difficult decisions rapidly during high-pressure news events.
- You communicate with clarity and confidence, building strong bridges across the organization.
Experience Required
- Minimum of 10 years' related leadership experience, including direct experience leading a newsroom.
- A proven track record of developing and executing successful audience growth strategies in a multiplatform environment.
- Demonstrated experience in community outreach and building relationships with diverse, underserved communities.
- A clear history of guiding complex journalistic decision-making and managing staff/resources within budgetary constraints.
- Experience leading the application of journalistic standards and practices in a daily newsroom setting.
- An ongoing interest in and deep understanding of media trends as they apply to digital, audio, and visual platforms.
- Proven ability to set clear objectives, make rapid decisions under tight deadlines, and successfully deliver on goals.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to be concise and precise on journalistic and programming matters.
- Experience leading a news team during major breaking news events.
- Knowledge of the law as it relates to broadcasting and journalism.
- Experience hiring, training, and supporting new staff in a journalistic setting.
Key Tasks & Responsibilities
- Provides strategically driven editorial leadership daily and on all station projects.
- Responsible for the strict application of CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices (JSP).
- Responds to complaints directed to the CBC Ombudsman.
- Works collaboratively with other CBC leaders to ensure strong national coverage of stories originating from Saskatchewan.
- Develops and executes targeted strategies to meet audience growth and engagement goals.
- Oversees local community outreach plans to connect the newsroom directly with community leaders, other media organizations and grassroots groups across the province.
- Builds and maintains strong relationships between the Saskatchewan local team and colleagues across the country.
- Works with finance staff to ensure costs are tracked and budgets are meticulously followed.
- Hires, trains, and drives the professional development of all newsroom staff.
