Position Summary:

We are seeking an Intermediate Software Engineer, Payments to join a newly forming Payments Engineering team and help build Kindsight's next-generation Payments Platform.

This is a hands-on engineering role on a small team building a new Payments service that will support Kindsight's fundraising products, including Ascend, AdvRM, and Connect.

You'll work alongside Senior and Staff engineers to build reliable backend services, integrate with our selected payments partner, and create the infrastructure needed to safely orchestrate and track the movement of donor funds.

This is a particularly strong opportunity for an engineer who already has real server-side Payments experience and wants to deepen their skills in system design, Payments architecture, and building financial infrastructure at scale.

You will primarily work within established technical designs, while gaining meaningful exposure to the architectural and design decisions behind them. As you grow, we want you taking ownership of increasingly complex pieces of the platform.

The work will initially be heavily backend-focused . Our backend technology for the new Payments service is still being finalized, with Ruby currently under strong consideration. You do not need prior Ruby, Salesforce, Apex, or LWC experience to be successful here.

What matters most is strong backend engineering fundamentals, genuine Payments experience, and the ability to learn.

What You’ll Do:

• Help build Kindsight's new Payments service and the infrastructure supporting our next-generation Payments Platform.

• Implement well-defined backend features and capabilities within technical designs established collaboratively by Senior and Staff engineers.

• Build integrations with payment gateways, processors, and our selected Payments partner.

• Develop reliable transaction-processing logic for systems handling real donor funds.

• Work with concepts such as payment authorization, tokenization, webhooks, retries, idempotency, transaction state, and reconciliation.

• Debug and resolve payment-processing failures, webhook issues, duplicate transactions, integration problems, and other production issues.

• Write automated tests for financial and business-critical backend logic.

• Participate actively in code review, both receiving feedback and reviewing appropriate changes from other engineers.

• Contribute to approximately two-week sprint cycles, including planning, delivery, review, and continuous improvement.

• Work closely with Senior and Staff engineers to understand not just what is being built, but why the system is being designed that way.

• Build your system-design skills by contributing to technical discussions and gradually taking ownership of smaller design decisions.

• Collaborate with Product and, as the Payments organization grows, QA, Support, and Payments Operations.

• Learn the fundraising domain and the unique financial structures of universities, healthcare foundations, nonprofits, and other Kindsight customers.

• Help build a system where financial correctness, reliability, and quality are treated as fundamental engineering requirements.

What We’re Looking For:

• 2–4 years of professional software engineering experience.

• Real experience building or maintaining a server-side integration with a payment gateway, processor, billing platform, or Payments system

• You understand concepts such as tokenization, webhooks, retries, idempotency, and transaction state because you've worked with them in production not just read about them.

• Strong backend engineering fundamentals in Ruby, Go, Java, C#, Python, Node.js, or another modern backend language.

• Ability to work effectively within an established technical design without needing every implementation decision made for you.

• Comfortable writing, testing, debugging, and maintaining backend business logic.

• Experience working with APIs and distributed system integrations.

• Basic understanding of reconciliation and why financial systems need mechanisms to verify that transactions have not been silently lost, duplicated, or processed incorrectly.

• Basic understanding of PCI-DSS scope-reduction concepts such as tokenization or hosted payment fields.

• Genuine interest in growing your system-design and Payments architecture capabilities.

Nice To Have:

• Experience with more than one payment gateway or processor.

• Experience with Stripe, Adyen, Braintree, Cybersource, Spreedly, TouchNet, Worldpay, or similar platforms.

• Experience working on SaaS, fintech, billing, Payments, or other transaction-heavy systems.

• Experience with recurring payments or subscription billing.

• Experience investigating chargebacks, refunds, failed payments, or transaction discrepancies.

• Experience with Salesforce Apex or Lightning Web Components.

• Experience working in a greenfield product or platform environment.

• Experience with systems processing meaningful transaction volume.

Not a Fit If:

• Your Payments experience is limited to dropping a client-side checkout component such as Stripe.js into an application, without working on the server-side transaction flow.

• You have never worked directly with payment webhooks, transaction processing, gateway APIs, or similar backend Payments functionality.

• You prefer to wait for complete certainty or consensus before investigating and moving a problem forward.

• You're looking for a pure Salesforce administration/configuration role.

• You're looking for a frontend-focused position — this team will be predominantly backend-oriented, particularly during the initial build.

• Experience working in a greenfield product or platform environment.
  

Compensation Range: $100,000 CAD -$120,000 CAD OTE annually, based on experience, market benchmarks and role complexity. We aim to offer fair, competitive pay that reflects your skills and the market.
