Overview of role:

WestJet is seeking a Project Lead reporting into our Digital Technology team. This individual can demonstrate a high standard of excellence, enjoys challenges, and is results-driven. The incumbent must be highly motivated and demonstrate the ability to work in an agile environment.

The Project Performance Development Lead reports to the Director Transformation Steering. The successful candidate in this role will be responsible for (financial) performance monitoring and performance improvement of individual projects, multi-project programs, project portfolio and multi-year portfolio roadmaps. This individual ensures that low-cost is integral part of WestJet's strategic portfolio roadmap, assesses if projects meet their promised aspirations and optimizes the project management related contractor spendings.

Note: This role does not have direct reports but is regarded as a functional leadership position

Key deliverables include:

• Plan, control and steer WestJet's project budget pool. Monitor the project performance during planning, execution and closure phases.
• Continuously develop and plan the rolling 5-year strategic portfolio roadmap together with WestJet's leadership team.
• Develop scorecards and dashboards with top KPIs on portfolio, project and process level to monitor the performance and to report to Portfolio Board and Steering Committees. Enable data driven decision making.
• Measure and monitor performance of portfolio and project management related processes and practices. Indication of improvement potentials.
• Support project managers across WestJet to provide high quality financial forecasts. Continuously optimize and simplify the reporting requirements and provide best practice sharing to improve competencies such cost/gap analysis, accruals, contingency management and root-cause analysis.
• Analyze impact of project candidates on the portfolio ROI and prepare recommendations to the Portfolio Board. Ensure that all projects are managed in a cost-efficient manner.
• Perform ex-post evaluations of project objectives to verify and prove if the intended value creation of the project has been achieved. Leverage the results to make more realistic estimates in the future and to build confidence in the appraisal process of project ideas or project candidates.
• Support decision making on allocating funds in such a way that availability of the funds is conditional to the achievement of project results.
• Optimize project management related contractor spendings. Enable the contractor selection together with the business and procurement. Administrate the contractor onboarding, support and phase out activities.

Experience and qualifications:

• Bachelor or Master degree or comparable in Business, Economics or Finance
• 10+ years experience in project portfolio and performance management and financial controlling with an increasing scale of complexity and responsibility
• Wide depth and breadth of knowledge in the domain; demonstrable experience in the knowledge
• Demonstrable experience applying a wide variety of tools and techniques to meet the specifics of the situation
• Strong analytical skills; experience in advanced analytics
• Ability to identify and help resolve systemic issues
• Experience in best practice sharing and training
• Experience in interacting with upper Management including C-Level
• Ability to operate at both the strategic and functional level to ensure that the team is able to achieve day to day deliverables and also focus on the larger picture and key outcomes
• Ability to coach and mentor both at the peer level and with less experienced team members
• Ability to effectively interact with all levels of personnel.
• Extensive negotiation experience and skills in an environment with high competition for resources
• Displays high emotional intelligence. Empathetic and able to vary own style of interaction to match the needs of a variety of stakeholders, audiences, personalities and temperaments
• Strong presentation skills - can clearly articulate their ideas to a wide variety of audiences and keep them engaged
• A history of demonstrating good decision making, unbiased and neutral
• Demonstrated ability to know when to escalate vs resolve conflict
• Possesses a high degree of political sensitivity, astuteness and the ability to effectively use the informal power structure to achieve success and clear obstacles
