Vice President, Finance & Corporate Development

S.E.M. Construction is entering a new era of growth, expanding our capabilities, strengthening our market position, and exploring strategic opportunities across Southwestern Ontario. We’re seeking a Vice President of Finance & Corporate Development with deep construction-industry expertise and a proven track record in M&A strategy, execution, and integration. This executive will strengthen our financial foundation and help shape the future of S.E.M. alongside our CEO and leadership team. Core Mandate Lead all financial operations at S.E.M. while architecting long-term financial strategy. Oversee accounting, reporting, forecasting, capital planning, and risk management, and serve as the strategic driver behind acquisition evaluation, negotiation, and integration.

Key Responsibilities Financial Leadership & Strategy

• Lead the full finance function, including accounting, budgeting, forecasting, treasury, and financial reporting.

• Develop and execute long-term financial strategies aligned with corporate growth objectives.
• Provide clear, data-driven insights to the CEO and executive team.

• Oversee cash flow management, capital allocation, and investment planning.

• Strengthen financial systems, controls, and processes to support scalability.

Construction Finance Accountability The Controller leads the day-to-day execution of the finance function. The Vice President provides executive oversight and remains accountable for the following:

• Job costing, WIP reporting, margin analysis, and project financial performance.

• Bonding, insurance, and financial compliance requirements appropriate to a mid-sized or large construction firm.

• The quality and reliability of forecasting, risk assessment, and project profitability information provided to operations and estimating.

• The financial performance of multi-sector construction portfolios, including IC&I, MURB, healthcare, and special projects. Mergers, Acquisitions & Corporate Development

• Identify and evaluate acquisition targets aligned with S.E.M.’s strategic direction.

• Lead financial due diligence, valuation modelling, and deal structuring.

• Partner with legal, tax, and external advisors to manage negotiations and transaction execution.

• Build integration plans that protect culture, retain talent, and accelerate value creation.
• Assess post-acquisition performance and ensure seamless operational and financial alignment. Risk Management & Governance

• Oversee corporate risk frameworks, including financial, operational, and compliance risks.

• Manage banking relationships, credit facilities, and capital structure optimization.

• Ensure adherence to regulatory, tax, and industry-specific financial requirements.

• Support board reporting, audit processes, and governance standards. Leadership & Team Development

• Lead and mentor the finance team, fostering a culture of accountability, clarity, and continuous improvement.

• Collaborate closely with operations, HR, safety, and business development to ensure financial alignment across the organization.

• Champion S.E.M.’s values and contribute to a strong, people-first leadership culture.

Requirements

Who You Are

A senior finance executive with 10–15+ years of progressive experience in a construction or large project-based environment.

• Proven experience leading M&A transactions, including due diligence, valuation, deal negotiation, and integration.

• Deep understanding of construction financials: WIP, job costing, bonding, risk, and multi-project forecasting.

• A strategic thinker who can operate at both the executive and operational levels.
• A relationship-builder who communicates clearly, collaborates naturally, and leads with integrity.

• Someone who thrives in a growing, entrepreneurial environment and wants to help shape a company’s future.

• Educational Foundation: Holds an advanced academic background such as a dual degree in law and business (e.g., JD/MBA from the Ivey Business School) or an equivalent combination of legal and financial education supporting sophisticated dealmaking, corporate governance, and strategic growth.
