Job Summary

The Laboratory Assistant performs a variety of duties associated with laboratory tests and analyses. The primary purpose of this position is to provide

client/patient registration for blood samples and laboratory specimens; order laboratory tests; perform blood collection; sorting, recording, centrifuging and preparing specimens for analysis; delivering specimens to the laboratory; packaging specimens for transport to other referral testing locations; receiving

samples from outside collections; and performing a variety of routine, automated and manual tests.

Job Qualifications

• Successful Completion of the Medical Laboratory Assistant Course from a recognized training program.
• Training or experience in basic laboratory techniques.
• Current and continuing certification with the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) as a Medical Laboratory Assistant is required.
• The successful applicant will be required to submit a satisfactory certificate of conduct.

• Occasionally lifts or moves supplies generally not weighing more than 25 lbs and occasionally carrying, pushing/pulling and lifting between 25-50 lbs.
• Constantly stands, walks and bends or stretches into awkward positions when performing specimen collection procedures with patients.
• Constantly there is a requirement for fine finger and precision work when using needles to extract specimens, and when palpating for veins, when entering data into the computer, and preparing specimen labels.
