The Vision of the Role

At Roarty Digital, the Character Artist is at the heart of our production. You won’t just be “making models”; you will be breathing life into digital humans and creatures. We are looking for an artist skilled in creating highly detailed, real-time assets that blur the line between game-play and cinema.

In this position, you will build on your existing skillset while pitching in across all aspects of the character pipeline—from high-poly sculpting and intricate cloth simulation to low-poly optimization and engine-ready material setup. You will work alongside some of the best leads in the business to deliver stunning characters for the industry’s most anticipated titles.

Primary Responsibilities as 3D Character Artist

1. High-Fidelity Character Sculpting

• Anatomical Mastery: Creating realistic human and creature models with a deep understanding of skeletal structure, musculature, and skin tension.
• Surface Detailing: Utilizing ZBrush or Mudbox to sculpt micro-surface details, including wrinkles, pores, and scars, ensuring the highest level of realism.

2. Advanced Cloth & Costume Creation

• Marvelous Designer Workflow: Designing and simulating realistic clothing. You must understand how different fabrics drape, fold, and react to body movement.
• Technical Hard Surface: Creating realistic accessories, armor, and gear that complement the organic character sculpts.

3. Real-Time Pipeline Management

• Retopology & UVs: Crafting clean, efficient low-poly game meshes that maintain the silhouette of the high-poly sculpt while staying within technical budgets.
• Texturing & Shading: Creating PBR (Physically Based Rendering) textures in Substance Painter that respond accurately to lighting environments.
• Unreal Engine Integration: Setting up characters within UE , including material instances, texture optimization, and ensuring the asset looks “stunning” in the final engine environment.

4. Collaborative Production

• Team Synergy: Actively participating in critiques and team meetings. You are a “team player” who values collective success over individual ego.
• Communication: Clearly articulating technical hurdles and creative choices to leads and project managers, especially in a remote work environment.

Required Skills & Technical Competencies

• Exceptional Portfolio: A showcase of work that demonstrates a mastery of Realism . We are looking for high-quality, real-time assets that look indistinguishable from film-quality renders.

• Software Proficiency: * Maya: For scene assembly, retopology, and UV mapping.

  • ZBrush/Mudbox: For organic and high-poly sculpting.

  • Substance Painter: For advanced texturing and material definition.

  • Marvelous Designer: For realistic garment creation.

• Engine Knowledge: A mandatory, “must-have” understanding of Unreal Engine (UE) .
• The “Real-Time” Mindset: A very strong understanding of the full workflow: Hi-poly to low-poly, baking maps (Normal, AO, Curvature), and material application.
• Experience: 3+ years of professional experience or a specialized post-secondary education in a related field.

Preferred Qualifications (The Plus Factor)

While not strictly required, we are highly interested in candidates who possess:

• Grooming Skills: Knowledge of hair creation for real-time (using XGen, Ornatrix, or UE Groom).

• Cinematic Experience: Background in creating assets for post-production or high-end cinematic trailers.

• Cross-Disciplinary Knowledge: A basic understanding of rigging or skinning to ensure your models are “deformation-friendly.”
