Your Opportunity
Our Toronto office is looking for a Manager to join our Corporate Restructuring team. BDO’s Corporate Restructuring team works with companies, lenders, creditors, shareholders and other stakeholders navigating financial distress, liquidity challenges, operational underperformance, and periods of significant change.
Our team advises clients on both formal insolvency proceedings and informal restructuring and turnaround situations, helping stakeholders assess their options, stabilize businesses, and develop practical solutions to complex financial challenges. This is a new role. As a Manager, you will take an active role in the planning and execution of restructuring engagements, work directly with senior client and stakeholder groups, and lead and develop members of the engagement team. You will have exposure to a broad range of mandates, which may include receiverships, bankruptcies, proposals, CCAA proceedings, business turnarounds, and other formal and informal restructuring engagements.
Responsibilities
- Advise corporations, lenders, creditors, shareholders and other stakeholders through financial reviews, business turnarounds and formal and informal financial restructurings.
- Participate in and manage aspects of formal insolvency engagements, including receiverships, bankruptcies, proposals and CCAA proceedings, as applicable.
- Assess the financial and operational position of distressed or underperforming businesses and help develop strategic restructuring, stabilization and turnaround alternatives.
- Prepare, review and analyze integrated cash flow models, financial projections, business plans and other financial information to assess liquidity, viability and restructuring alternatives.
- Identify key financial, operational and business risks and develop practical recommendations to address challenges and improve outcomes.
- Lead components of client engagements, including planning work, coordinating deliverables, managing priorities and ensuring work is completed accurately and within established timelines.
- Lead, coach and develop engagement team members, including delegating work, reviewing deliverables and providing ongoing feedback and support.
- Maintain ongoing communication with debtors, creditors, lenders, legal counsel, governmental regulators, the Courts and other stakeholders through meetings, written reports and Court attendance.
- Prepare and present high-quality reports, analyses and recommendations to financial institutions, C-suite executives, boards, shareholders and other key stakeholders.
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with clients and key referral sources, including financial institutions, legal professionals and other members of the restructuring community.
- Identify business development opportunities and participate in proposals, presentations, market research and other practice development initiatives.
- Contribute ideas and recommendations to continuously improve engagement delivery, processes and the overall client experience.
- Collaborate with colleagues across BDO's broader Financial Advisory and service offerings where client needs extend beyond restructuring.
- Maintain flexibility to travel to client sites, BDO offices and other off-site locations as required.
- Demonstrate flexibility to support clients and stakeholders outside of regular business hours when circumstances require.
Qualifications & Experience
- 2+ years of relevant corporate restructuring, insolvency, turnaround or related financial advisory experience.
- Canadian CPA designation is required.
- A CFA designation or MBA degree is considered an asset.
- Enrolled in or progressing through the Chartered Insolvency and Restructuring Professional (CIRP) Qualification Program, with an interest in continued progression within the insolvency profession.
- Working knowledge of the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act (BIA), Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA) and other relevant insolvency and restructuring legislation.
- Experience participating in formal and/or informal restructuring engagements.
- Strong financial analysis and financial modelling skills, including experience preparing and analyzing integrated cash flow forecasts.
- Strong understanding of financial statements and the ability to identify key financial, operational and liquidity issues.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple workstreams, competing priorities and tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience leading engagements and/or coaching and developing junior team members.
- Strong business acumen, analytical thinking, negotiation and problem-solving capabilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex financial matters clearly to senior stakeholders.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with clients and stakeholders in challenging or time-sensitive situations.
- Interest in developing professional relationships, building a business network and participating in business and practice development activities.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, with strong proficiency in Word and PowerPoint.
- Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and project-management skills.
- Access to reliable transportation and flexibility to travel to BDO offices, client locations and other off-site locations as required.
Benefits
- We provide comprehensive benefits from day one, and a flexible personal time off policy.
- We pay for performance with competitive total cash compensation that recognizes and rewards your contribution.
- We support your overall wellbeing and provide reimbursement for wellness initiatives that fit your lifestyle.
- The compensation range for this role is $88,000 to $134,000 annually.
