River Valley Ambassador

• Completion of the twelfth (12th) grade

Assets:

• 6 months of experience working with the public tour groups children or delivering community programs
• Experience working directly with members of the public in a park or outdoor setting
• Knowledge of local River Valley ecology trail etiquette and outdoor stewardship practices
• Ability to ice skate (for those who do not skate the ability to wear ice cleats and walk safely on ice is required)

Skills required for success:

• Strong verbal and written communication skills for clear real-time public guidance and information sharing
• Ability to translate passion for the outdoors into engaging public education about wildlife safety environmental stewardship and park etiquette
• Excellent conflict resolution and interpersonal skills to handle sensitive feedback and community interactions constructively
• Proficiency with digital tools including the Google Workspace suite
• Competency in capturing visual content (photos/videos)
• Strong organizational skills to maintain accurate written records logs and site data
• Ability to work independently or collaboratively with interdisciplinary staff within various park spaces
• Alignment to our Cultural Commitments and Leadership Competencies ( a culture of equity diversity reconciliation and inclusion

Conditions of Employment:

• Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton and there may be a cost associated with this requirement
• Candidates are required to hold a valid Alberta Class 5 drivers license (or provincial equivalent) or higher. Candidates will be required to arrange their own transportation and where appropriate will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require the candidate to obtain business-use auto insurance
• Possession of current Standard First Aid CPR-C and AED certifications
• Ability to perform physical tasks including walking standing for extended periods and occasional lifting up to 20 lbs (and rarely up to 50 lbs)
• Ability to work outdoors in variable weather conditions across different seasons
• Applicants may be tested

Work Environment:

• Note: Due to the nature of this work this position is not eligible for a hybrid work arrangement.
• The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance
• Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor park environments with frequent exposure to changing weather conditions hot/cold temperatures and precipitation
• Involves regular public interactions and active movement across park terrain
• Availability to work during the evenings weekends and holidays is required

Are you passionate about the outdoors and shaping the visitor experience in Edmontons iconic river valley As a River Valley Ambassador you will be the welcoming face of our River Valley Parks section across more than 20 park locations connecting with the community supporting vibrant events and championing outdoor stewardship.

In this role you will engage directly with visitors guide positive park use gather real-time feedback and support the seamless delivery of events and drop-in programs. Working outdoors in Edmontons natural ribbon of green you will help keep digital updates accurate and ensure our River Valley Parks operations remain responsive to public needs. Join our team to champion vibrant visitor experiences and protect the heart of our citys green spaces.

What will you do

Visitor Engagement & Education

• Engage with community members and park visitors to deliver welcoming high-quality customer service and enhance the overall visitor experience
• Provide real-time park information directions and friendly guidance on park etiquette and safety
• Facilitate drop-in programs guided hikes group presentations and roving outreach interactions

Parks & Operations Safety

• Conduct trail intercept surveys on-site surveys and point counts to gather usage data and satisfaction metrics
• Serve as an on-site skate monitor at outdoor skating surfaces to ensure safe public use and enjoyment
• Complete park site assessments to evaluate conditions amenities and alignment with park frameworks
• Identify document and report maintenance or safety issues to support high-quality park standards
• Monitor usage trends from social media and on-site pedestrian counters and report data anomalies as needed

Events Administration & Communications

• Support the setup execution and takedown of seasonal events including moving event assets like tables and chairs
• Draft scheduled social media or web content for supervisor review using inclusive language standards
• Monitor social media to drive digital outreach share key park updates and build an online River Valley presence
• Maintain accurate operational records participant statistics supply inventories and safety incident reports
• Other related duties as required
