The Parkland School Division currently has a Regular (10-month) Part-time 21 hours/week (0.6 FTE) Division Community Support Worker position to be based at the Centre for Education in Stony Plain, Alberta. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing tiered support to families and students from Early Education to Grade 12 in PSD under the guidance and direction of the Coordinator. This position includes collaborating with wrap-around support services with community partners and family supports.

POSITION FUNCTION & PURPOSE

Parkland School Division staff demonstrate the belief that student success is linked to student and family well-being. The Division Community Support Worker works as an integral part of the Student Supports and Services team. Reporting to the Division Principal of Student Services for overall supervision, this position takes day-to-day functional direction from the Division Family Support Coordinator to provide connection and support to identified families who are in need of connections to community services. The Division Community Support Worker helps families to navigate systems through a supportive, solution-focused approach in consultation with the Division Family Support Coordinator.

JOB DUTIES

Individual Family Supports

• Assists in providing timely connection to supports and services for identified families who are in need of connections to community supports.
• Coordinates and facilitates parent/student meetings, case conferences, and inter-agency consultations as needed.
• In partnership with students/families, supports action plans to address the issues identified during the inquiry process.
• Provides referrals, support, guidance, and problem-solving to parents/guardians of PSD students to address issues related to student and family functioning. Provides parenting skill building, emotional support, and feedback to parents/guardians on caseload.
• Works with schools and families in connecting students to transition supports for students enrolled in specialized programs who are transitioning to adulthood.
• Provides ongoing communication and follow-up with school staff regarding divisional and community support being provided.
• Supports families in developing their independence in accessing resources, with the goal of transitioning families off caseload.

Universal Family Supports

• Raises awareness and connects schools with community services and resources available to students/families.
• Supports the facilitation of regular learning series for parents/guardians of PSD and Parkland County students on topics related to family functioning (i.e., Strong Families sessions).
• Organizes and facilitates workshops and information sessions for school staff, as requested by the Division Principal - Student Services.

Collaboration, Communication, & Reporting

• Works as part of a collaborative team including various professionals in the community and school division.
• Supports the development and maintenance of a network of contacts and community agencies/members and resources to support the needs of students/families.
• In confidence and with appropriate permission of student/families: obtains, provides, or exchanges information with professionals/agencies to gain access to necessary supports and services.

Other Responsibilities

• Maintains accurate and timely records, and provides reports to the Division Principal of Student Services, as requested.
• Collaborates with and provides regular updates to the Division Family Support Coordinator on all areas of caseload responsibility.
• Performs other duties, as assigned by the Division Principal of Student Services.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Education & Training

• Diploma or Degree in related human/social service field.
• Non-Violent Crisis Intervention and Mental Health First Aid certification would be an asset.

Experience

• 3 to 5 years of related experience is an asset.
• Experience and knowledge in inter-agency relationships would be an asset.
• Proven ability to plan, coordinate and implement supports for students and families.
• Experience in providing professional learning opportunities within the area of family support.
• Experience collaborating with large teams and being accountable to stakeholders.
• Understanding of Tiered Response Models (e.g., Response to Intervention, Collaborative Response) is an asset.
• Experience in delivery of the following supports would be an asset: social-emotional learning, emotional regulation, trauma-sensitive practices, growth mindset, student aggression/anger, social skills, adolescent issues, individual and family stressors, family violence,
• Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to travel and work flexible hours.
• Project Management Experience is an asset.

DECISION MAKING

• Work is performed under the direction of the Division Principal of Student Services.
• Consults with the Division Family Support Coordinator regarding caseload, partnerships, initiatives, funding, and communication decisions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORKING CONDITIONS

• Some sitting, standing, moving, lifting, and bending (or a combination of these movements) and intense concentration with frequent interruptions.
• Work is located at the division office, in the community, and in schools.
• Works on a 10-month school calendar.
• This position requires local travel, including the use of a personal vehicle and a valid Alberta Driver’s License; mileage will be reimbursed.

RISKS OF THE WORK ENVIRONMENT (may include)

• Contact with infectious diseases.
• Noise level.
• Dealing with uncooperative or difficult adults and youth.

There are inherent risks in the work of a Division Community Support Worker when working with students and families at Parkland School Division. The Division Community Support Worker is to be prepared to satisfactorily manage the inherent risks encountered in their work. There is a potential risk that a Division Community Support Worker or other staff might be injured by a youth or adults they may encounter in their role. Student behaviour can be somewhat unpredictable at times, as the specific needs of students are not always known. Some students may become aggressive, which has the potential for causing injury to staff. PSD makes staff aware of known risks before assignments and provides training to staff for known and anticipated risks. Staff are responsible for advising their supervisor of unknown risks encountered with adults or youth. The Division Community Support Worker and other staff are expected to cooperate in ensuring workplace health and safety in a caring and respectful educational setting.

Hours of Work: 21 hours/week (Between the hours of 8:00 AM and 3:30 PM Monday to Friday (hours to be determined by the Division Principal).

Pay Rate: Pay Group 7 - $39.88-$44.56
