Director of Professional Practice
Engineers Yukon
The Director of Professional Practice (DPP) is a P.Eng. certified 0.75 FTE position. The role is to ensure that member registrants uphold standards of ethical and competent practice in alignment with legislation and Engineers Yukon’s mandate to protect the public. This role provides leadership in developing professional practice programs, guidelines and resources, as well as serving as a trusted advisor to registrants and the Engineers Yukon team.
Within a year, the DPP will include the role of Registrar, assuming responsibility for discipline and complaints management. This includes ensuring that all complaints are addressed promptly and in accordance with the Engineering Profession Act, Regulations, Code of Ethics, Bylaws, and principles of natural justice.
This position reports to the Executive Director.
First-Year Focus
The initial year in this role is pivotal. Along with providing professional practice advice and ongoing duties, key first-year priorities include:
- Develop ing the Framework: Lead the creation of a structured system for professional practice and compliance including standards, guidelines, policies, and procedures.
- Collaborating with the Volunteer Registrar : Work closely to refine discipline and enforcement processes that strengthen the association’s effectiveness.
- Planning the Transition : Design and implement a transition plan to merge the DPP and Registrar roles into a single position within 12 months.
Ongoing Duties & Responsibilities
Professional Practice Leadership
- Provide advice and interpretation on practice, ethics, and competency requirements to individual members and permit holders in their practices.
- Monitor trends in engineering practice and regulation; identify emerging issues affecting the profession.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to Council and committees on matters related to professional and ethical practice.
Communication s and Outreach
- Respond to inquiries from registrants and the public regarding standards of practice and ethics.
- Develop educational materials, notices, and presentations on professional practice issues.
- Represent Engineers Yukon at local or national forums, conferences, and Engineers Canada national officials groups (eg. Discipline & Enforcement, National Practice).
Development of Standards, Guidelines, and Policies
- Lead the development and maintenance of professional practice guidelines, standards, and policies.
- Draft policy recommendations for Council approval related to professional conduct, membership and enforcement, practice reviews, and continuing competence.
- Lead the development of a plan for training and professional development of volunteer and staff working on areas of professional practice, compliance, discipline, and enforcement.
- Coordinate consultation with registrants and external stakeholders on new or revised practice standards.
Continuing Professional Development
- Administer the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program, including compliance monitoring and member guidance.
- Review and evaluate CPD reporting; provide advice on acceptable learning activities.
- Promote awareness of professional development requirements and resources.
Compliance , Discipline, and Enforcement
- Ensure that a clear complaints management process is in place including intake and review, Discipline Committee and/or Discipline Panel follow-up on the status of complaints, and public communications.
- Lead on the discipline, enforcement and compliance requirements as outlined in the Engineering Profession Act, Regulations, Code of Ethics and Bylaws.
- Collaborate with Investigations and Discipline functions on practice-related concerns.
- Identify patterns or systemic practice issues and recommend proactive measures or education.
Committee and Regulatory Support
- Provide professional practice expertise to statutory or advisory committees (e.g., Professional Practice Task Force, Board of Examiners, National Discipline & Enforcement Officials Group, and National Practice Officials Group.
- Prepare reports, discussion papers, and background materials for Council, Executive Director and committees.
- Expectation of national travel for meetings.
Qualifications
- Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in good standing with EY (or eligible).
- Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in engineering practice, regulation, or a related field.
- Committed to upholding the regulator’s public protection mandate with fairness and integrity.
- Strong understanding of professional ethics, regulation, and risk management.
- Strong writing, analysis, and communication skills — able to translate technical and regulatory issues clearly.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, build relationships, prioritize competing demands, and exercise sound judgment.
Desirable Attributes
- Experience with self-regulation or public-sector policy environments.
- Familiarity with engineering guidelines and interprovincial standards.
- Collegial and pragmatic; able to work effectively with small teams and volunteer committees.
- Experience working in various digital platforms.
- Yukon resident or experience in Yukon-based practice.
