The Department is seeking a forward-thinking leader to support the safe day-to-day operations of Yukon’s only correctional centre. The Whitehorse Correctional Centre is a 151-bed direct supervision facility that houses both adult men and women. Reporting to the Superintendent, the Deputy Superintendent of Operations is responsible for ensuring adequate staffing levels, managing the evaluation of security programs, performance managing direct reports, operating within identified budgets and contributing to the development of operational policies and procedures. The position is responsible for providing rotational after-hours on-call at the correctional centre.

The Corrections Branch uses the least restrictive measures with inmates, offenders, police prisoners and persons who have been granted judicial interim release that are consistent with the protection of those individuals, the public and staff members.

Essential Qualifications

Please submit your resume clearly demonstrating how you meet the following qualifications. Please note selection for further consideration will be based solely on the information you provide in your resume; ensure you use a month/year to month/year format and include the duties you performed in each of your positions.

• Post-secondary coursework in criminology, justice, corrections, social services or other related field;
• Considerable experience supervising a multi-disciplinary team, including instructing, directing, evaluating, and performance managing employees;
• Significant years of experience enforcing policies, regulations, and procedures in a correctional center or remand facility;
• Experience providing employee coaching, training and/or mentoring;
• Experience performing investigations and conducting disciplinary hearings would be an asset.

Candidates who have education/coursework and/or training along with considerable experience in the essential qualification listed above may be equally considered.

• Ability to delegate effectively and assign tasks;
• Ability to multi-task and triage situations based on priority/need;
• Excellent interpersonal and facilitation skills;

• Exceptional oral and written communication skills;
• Well-developed conflict resolution skills.

Conditions Of Employment

Have and maintain:

• Valid Security Clearance including vulnerable sector (required prior to first day of work);
• Valid Medical Clearance (required prior to first day of work);
• Valid First Aid and CPR certification (must be obtained within 6 months of hire);
• Valid Class 5 driver’s license (required prior to first day of work). Rotating shift work including evenings, weekends and statutory holidays;

• Rotating shift work including evenings, weekends and statutory holidays;
• Occasional travel within and outside the Territory;
• Heavy lifting;
• Wearing a uniform.
