The opportunity:
Provide assistance and/or representation to students who are going through a formal process within the university, such as a disciplinary investigation, or appealing an academic, admission, disciplinary or administrative decision and are appearing before a University Committee such as, residence, department, faculty or Senate. Assisting students with informal or formal processes under the Respectful Work & Learning Environment, Prevention of Learner Mistreatment and Professionalism Policies (Rady Faculty of Health Sciences) and Sexual Violence policies. Assisting students in making a complaint, or responding to a complaint, under the Responsible Conduct of Research Policy, in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate Studies and the Office of Research and International. The Student Advocate may also represent students at investigation meetings under this policy. Assists in the handling of student complaints not elsewhere addressed by University of Manitoba policies and procedure. Provide accurate assessment of the student's situation and whether a further referral is appropriate. Providing advice and assistance to members of the university community, including senior administrators (e.g., Associate Deans) with regard to university/faculty/department/course policies and procedures.
The qualifications and experience we're looking for:
- Undergraduate degree required in related area is required (e.g. Education, Psychology, Social Work or Law).
- Graduate Degree is preferred.
- Three years of directly related experience is required.
- Previous experience in a university/college setting working directly with students required.
- Knowledge of contemporary student issues required.
- Experience with legal or judicial aspects of higher education (e.g., administrative law, procedural fairness, natural justice, experience with appeal committees or administrative decision-makers) is required.
- Knowledge of University/College administrative structures and policies, procedures and regulations related to students required.
- Must have professional and effective demeanor before administrative bodies (i.e., academic or discipline appeal committees)
- Experience working with people in difficult and emotional situations required.
- Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds required.
- Training and experience working with individuals experiencing mental health challenges is required.
- Experience working in a confidential office setting and/or with confidential information is required.
- Experience in successfully planning and presenting to large groups, e.g. student orientations and staff workshops is required.
- Experience or training in conflict resolution, mediation is preferred.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Must possess excellent interpersonal communication (verbal and written).
- Must be proficient and articulate.
- Must have a high degree of organizational skills, time management, and effective prioritization of work
- Excellent listening techniques Required.
- Capacity to balance assertiveness and diplomacy with senior university officials is required.
- Skill in interpreting and applying policies to real-life scenarios required.
- Must be able to handle a significantly large and complex student caseload.
- Ability to meet with and interact in a professional manner with students, faculty and staff is required.
- Ability to remain calm and confidently handle sensitive situations with confidentiality and empathy required.
- Ability to work both independently, with minimal direction, as well as collaboratively and consultatively in a team environment required
- Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
- Knowledge of and experience at University of Manitoba with regard to administrative structures and policies, procedures and regulations related to students, particularly for Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, is preferred.
- Training and experience working with individuals from a trauma-informed approach.
- Available to attend meetings prior to 8:30am or after 4:30pm, as needed.
