Department: Public Works

Location: HALIFAX

Type of Employment: Term

Closing Date: 05-Aug-26 (Applications are accepted until 11:59 PM Atlantic Time)

Maintaining our provincial infrastructure is no small job. We’re recruiting road safety professionals to help our Province achieve big things.

The Registry of Motor Vehicles Division at the Department of Public Works (PW) is responsible for the administration of drivers and vehicles in the province. We are responsible for the policies, legislation, and regulations that guide Road Safety and operate in a proactive regulatory environment. We maintain records regarding vehicles, driver licensing, medical fitness, driver competency, collisions, and compliance, all working together to ensure a safe road network.

About Our Opportunity

The Deputy Registrar of Motor Vehicles is responsible for overseeing and managing key operational areas within the Registry related to all aspects involving drivers and vehicles.

Primary Accountabilities

The Deputy Registrar responsibilities involve administration of the Motor Vehicle Act, Off Highway Vehicles Act and all corresponding regulations. In this capacity, the Deputy Registrar exercises delegated statutory authority under the Act to approve, suspend, cancel, or otherwise administer driver’s licences and vehicle registrations. Responsible for the operational oversight of the Driver Competency and Medical programs. The Deputy Registrar conducts hearings as required by the Act and works with the Registrar and other Deputy Registrars in establishing policies and procedures. The Deputy Registrar provides expert leadership on driver competency and medical fitness programs, representing the Department on national and international committees and working groups. The role is responsible for making complex regulatory decisions and ensuring the consistent application of legislation, policies, and program requirements.

Qualifications and Experience

This may be the right opportunity if you have a bachelor’s degree along with several years of related experience; an equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.

You have previous experience conducting critical analysis of existing business processes, providing creative solutions to realize operational efficiencies and to reduce costs and errors. You have demonstrated experience assigning, monitoring and examining the work of staff, managing time and identifying staff training and professional development needs.

You possess exceptional communication (Written and Verbal) and relationship building skills, and are able to build and maintain communication and collaboration with both internal and external stakeholders. A thorough knowledge of the Motor Vehicle Act and supporting regulations and policies is required. The ability to work independently and work well under pressure is important given the significant and important nature of the workload. Analytical and problem solving skills are necessary when resolving issues and leading the implementation of program changes.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Equivalency

This is an excellent career opportunity for many, and we do consider an equivalent combination of training, education, and experience. Applicants relying on education and experience equivalencies must demonstrate such equivalencies in their application.

Benefits

Based on the employment status and union agreement, the Government of Nova Scotia offers its employees a wide range of benefits such as a Defined Benefit Pension Plan, Health, Dental, Life Insurance, General illness, Short and Long Term Disability, Vacation and Employee and Family Assistance Programs.
