Nature of Position:

Supports youth and their families who face barriers in school and at home. Addresses problems, needs and risks. Develops and implements family-centred, short- term, issue-specific early-intervention plans with the aim of maintaining school engagement and safe, stable housing. This program will focus on Urban Indigenous Youth between 12 - 24 years of age, and will foster and promote youth wellness through mentorships, connections with elders, connections with culture, and connections through land-based learning. This position will also provide support services for the Upstream Kelowna Project to prevent youth homelessness.

Duties:

• Assist in planning and implementing wellness programs such as recreation and culture, housing and homelessness prevention.
• Support youth by providing rides to appointments that promote wellness and homelessness prevention such as counselling, doctor, dentist, food bank, housing interviews, etc.
• Supports youth and their families who face barriers in school and at home. Addresses problems, needs and risks. Develops and implements family-centred, short- term, issue-specific early-intervention plans with the aim of maintaining school engagement and safe, stable housing.
• Assist youth when filling out housing applications, applying for identification, applying for jobs, etc.
• Help youth build life skills such as communication, relationship building, resiliency, self-esteem, and self-management in a culturally sensitive manner.
• Plans, prepares, and conducts group or individual sessions using techniques such as active listening, conflict resolution, and problem solving within a family and natural supports framework to resolve the identified problems, needs and risks.
• Assists Upstream team with planning, coordination, and facilitation of project phases including implementation of the Upstream Assessment in schools, conducting check-in interviews, triage, case management, and evaluation.
• Ensure to comply with to the Ki-Low-Na Friendship Society Policies and Procedures
• Contributes to the Ki-Low-Na Friendship Society's on-going success by accomplishing other duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications:

• Human Service Worker, Bachelor in Child and Youth Care, or equivalent education and/or experience
• Experience working in Indigenous communities and/or organizations
• Knowledge of issues and challenges facing Urban Indigenous youth
• Demonstrated knowledge of Indigenous culture, traditions, and protocols
• 1-3 year experience working with children and youth
• Strong organizational skills
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Working knowledge of computer software - MS Word, Excel, Outlook
• Strong Internet and Social Media literacy
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively

Requirements:

• A valid class 5 driver's license and clean driver's abstract
• Operate and own reliable vehicle as some travel may be required
• Class 4 license is an asset
• Must consent to a Criminal Record Check
• Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, and occasional overnights - based on program needs
• Preference will be given to applicants of Indigenous ancestry

Working Conditions:

• Ability to lift items as heavy as 20 lbs
• Intermittent physical activity including walking, standing, sitting, lifting and supporting guests
• Work in weather environments that may sometimes be extremely hot or extremely cold, snowy or icy
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment often dealing with emotionally driven clients
• May be exposed to biohazards
