Job Summary

We are seeking a dedicated Supervisor for our Animal Care team. Reporting to the Manager, Animal Care and Well-being, this role involves overseeing the administration of animal care at our shelter, ensuring the well-being of animals through intake, assessment, enrichment, veterinary care, and general husbandry. The Supervisor will provide leadership to the team, focusing on excellence in customer service and animal care.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Oversee the day to day operations and resources associated with animal and enrichment (scheduling, time and labour, budgets, supply management)
• Manage and coach animal care team including recruitment, training, performance management and development planning
• Foster an environment focused on customer service, safety, education and animal care
• Manage animal intake to disposition cycle
• Coordination of vet care with external / contracted vet clinics or veterinarians; administer medication as required and oversee progress in animal care improvements
• Develop and maintain efficient and high-quality animal care processes and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) including assessment for adoption, euthanasia, or rescue as well as ensuring high standards of cleanliness for the animals

• Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders and develop communications (educational materials, corporate reports, project charters and internal and external communications) in a professional manner
• Managing staff issues and schedules in accordance with the collective agreement, with a focus on providing optimal service levels and balancing budgetary constraints
• Develop and maintain reporting on shelter metrics and animal records.
• Maintain awareness of related industry best practices and associated legislation to effectively oversee sheltering and animal care.
• Lead, implement and operationalize workplan initiatives through sound project management and LEAN principles.
• Foster an environment of health, safety and wellness and ensure that all incidents are investigated and documented as per policy.
• Serve as back-up to Supervisor, Shelter, Licensing & Client Services

Skills and Qualifications

• Veterinary Technician Certification required; OAVT membership must be in good standing
• 5 to 7 years professional experience in animal handling and behavior management
• Previous supervisory (leadership) experience is preferred, ideally in a unionized environment
• Proof of up to date rabies vaccination will be required
• Strongly customer-centric with demonstrated ability to communicate and deal effectively with the public, external agencies, elected officials, and City staff
• Financial management – budget, contract management and vendor relations
• Excellent communication skills (oral & written) with proven success in resolving disputes through tact and diplomacy
• Experience with enterprise resource planning systems; previous experience with Chameleon, SAP, concur, Success Factors is preferred.
• Demonstrated competency in business writing, which may include development of educational materials, corporate reports, project charters and internal and external communications.
• A proven self-starter that uses sound judgement in the decision-making process with a focus on meeting the needs of the business and maintaining a focus on excellence in animal care, customer service and making Animal Services a great place to work
• Valid class “G” Licence and a Drivers Abstract acceptable to the City
• Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays (24 – 7 operation), 40 hour work week

 

Hourly Rate/Salary: $ 91,701.00 - $ 122,268.00
