Qualifications

APPLICANTS SHOULD SELF-DECLARE ON THEIR COVER LETTER/RESUME AS INDIGENOUS (FIRST NATION, METIS AND/OR INUIT).

MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING REQUIRED

• Undergraduate Degree in a related discipline is required.
• Knowledge of university regulations, programs and procedures as they relate to the Faculty of Architecture is required.
• Experience, knowledge, and competency with Indigenous cultures, history and community protocols is required.
• Personal experience as an Indigenous student attending a post-secondary institution in an urban setting is required.

EXPERIENCE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

• One year of directly related administrative experience is required.
• Ability to quickly establish a strong and personal rapport with Indigenous contacts in the community required.
• Experience delivering presentations, workshops, and facilitating discussions with diverse audiences is preferred.
• Experience working with students in the post-secondary or public school system, providing mentorship, guidance, and making appropriate referrals is preferred.
• Expertise in marketing, communications, and public relations, including experience promoting programs through various media outlets is preferred.
• Experience in conceiving, developing, planning, and executing complex projects with limited supervision, including organizing meetings, and events is preferred.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with others in cooperative ventures required.
• Excellent communication oral and written skills required.
• Experience working in an office environment required.
• Experience working in a confidential environment required.
• Ability to deal effectively with all levels of faculty, staff, students, and the public required.
• Ability to demonstrate integrity in handling confidential matters required.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint) required.
• Reliability and self-motivation required.
• Must be a great team player.
• An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

OTHER JOB RELATED QUALIFICATIONS THAT MAY BE PREFERRED:

• Knowledge of the Faculty of Architecture and its programs is an asset.
• Fluency in an Indigenous language is an asset.
• Must have a genuine interest in helping students.

Some travel and overtime may be required.

Key responsibilities

Student Support

• Provide culturally responsive mentorship and guidance to Faculty of Architecture Indigenous students.
• Assist in connecting Indigenous students to support services within and outside the Faculty of Architecture, including academic advising, career planning, coaching, cultural support, experiential learning, financial aid and assistance, and professional development.
• Assist in creating and sustaining a supportive, inclusive environment that upholds Indigenous rights, values and protocols.
• Refer students to appropriate on- and off-campus supports and services as needed.

Recruitment

• Assist the Partners Program at all on- and off-campus recruitment events, including New Buffalo Gathering, Open House (Fall & Winter), Career Symposiums, and other professional events.
• Deliver on-campus tours and activities for groups and individuals, including the coordination of participation from Indigenous programs, faculty, and student representatives when appropriate.
• Provide in-person, telephone, and written advising services to prospective students and their families, teachers, etc.
• Assist the Partners Program/Dean’s Office with planning, implementing, and evaluating marketing strategies to attract Indigenous students.

Event Coordination

• In collaboration with the Indigenous Design and Planning Student Association (IDPSA) and the Partners Program, assist in coordinating events (e.g. guest speakers, symposia, workshops, ceremonies and cultural gatherings) on Indigenous knowledges and practices.
• Assist with room bookings, food service bookings, audio-visual equipment set up, travel arrangements, expense reimbursement, agenda development, venue preparation, and event set-up & take-down processes.
• Act as event photographer.

Community Building (journey towards reconciliation)

• Work with IDPSA members to foster an inclusive and supportive environment among Indigenous students that results in organic peer support.
• Work with faculty, staff and students to implement the Faculty of Architecture Reconciliation Action Plan.
• Document current and emerging work towards reconciliation within the Faculty.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with Indigenous communities, leaders, and organizations on and off campus.
• Collaborate with campus units, alumni, and community partners to enhance programming and student opportunities.
• Coordinate student-led community engagement initiatives and encourage student volunteers to give back.
• Create opportunities for Indigenous alumni to remain involved and connected.
• Support opportunities for cross-cultural learning between Western and Indigenous views, including providing resources for faculty, staff and students, and supporting faculty and instructors in developing courses and studios that engage with Indigenous knowledges and practices, where possible in partnership with community.
• Other duties as assigned.
