Qualifications

MINIMAL FORMAL EDUCATION REQUIRED

• High school completion with job‑related options plus two years = directly-related experience.-

OR

• Completion of a Community College course in a related discipline with no experience.
• Some post secondary education is preferred.

EXPIERENCE

• Demonstrated undergraduate research laboratory experience across multiple disciplines including microbiology, immunology, and cancer biology through research assistant positions at the University of Manitoba and affiliated institutes.
• Experience performing routine molecular and cellular biology techniques under supervision, including sample preparation, sterile technique, and data collection.
• Experience working in both academic research and industry laboratory settings (including QA laboratory co-op experience).
• Experience with laboratory organization, experimental documentation, and participation in structured research projects.
• Exposure to collaborative research environments and multi-project laboratory operations.
• An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Ability to perform standard laboratory procedures accurately and follow detailed protocols independently under supervision is required.
• Strong attention to detail with experience in experimental documentation, record keeping, and data integrityis required.
• Familiar with basic molecular biology and immunology techniques (e.g., cell culture, sample handling, sterile technique, and laboratory assays) is required.
• Fast-paced research environments is required.
• Effective communication and teamwork skills developed through multi-lab research collaborations and student leadership roles is required.
• Proficiency with basic computer applications for data entry, analysis, and reporting is required.
• Proven ability to work in multidisciplinary research teams and contribute to ongoing scientific projects is required.
• Demonstrated leadership and training capacity through student organizations and research presentations is required.
• Strong academic performance and multiple research awards indicating high reliability and technical aptitude is required.
• Experience presenting research at departmental and institutional research events is required.
• Commitment to laboratory safety, quality standards, and continuous learning in research environments is required.
• A satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.

Key responsibilities

• General Laboratory maintenance, cleaning, inventory management, ordering supplies/reagents and equipment upkeep.
• Assisting with routine laboratory procedures and research experiments under supervision.
• Learning and performing standard laboratory techniques and maintaining accurate records.
• Assisting with onboarding and technical training of students/new staff in routine procedures.
• Administrative tasks, safety compliance and participation in lab meetings.
• May be required to preform related duties not exceeding skills and capabilities as required.
