Qualifications

MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING

• B.F.A. required, preferably with a focus on videography, with three years of directly-related experience.

EXPERIENCE

• Working with a green screen and familiarity with video and sound booth equipment is required.
• An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Experience with all MS Office applications and Mac Studio is required.
• Organizational skills are required – including identifying job priorities and ensuring that these are met, organizing and maintaining inventory lists.
• Effective communication skills, both written and verbal are required.
• WHIMIS training is an asset.
• Genie lift training is an asset.
• Ability to adapt techniques, to plan and carry out tasks and procedures under general direction and to keep within budget and schedule guidelines is required.
• The ability to work independently, exercise discretion, initiative and creativity in solving problems are required, as is the ability to work within the respectful workplace guidelines of the University of Manitoba.
• Initiative and ability to master new and difficult techniques through further education or training required.
• Ability to train staff and students in techniques used in the workplace is required.
• Ability to work in a cooperative and flexible manner in servicing the needs of each area required.
• A sensitivity to the learning environment of a studio art program preferred.
• Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.

Key responsibilities

Technical Support (General)

• Responsible for the daily operation of the sound stage and video studio area including, supervision of users (students and staff). This includes:
  • Facilities are organized and clean
  • Facilities are properly maintained
  • Equipment is properly maintained
  • Necessary supplies and materials are in stock
• Repairs and mechanical adjustments to the Sound Stage equipment. For anything more complex, the technician would identify the problem and contact a specialist on or off campus for repairs via proper purchasing procedures.
• Maintaining video equipment, such as video cameras, and regular cleaning.
• Provides orientations, responds with assistance and technical advice, and follow-up technical instructions to questions from all users.
• Contributes and assists in creating technical information and resources in formats such as web pages, PDFs.
• Develops procedures and maintains the facility as an effective resource for all curriculum and related activities.
• Maintains libraries of technical information. Acts as a technical resource for all users to facilitate curriculum and pedagogical goals.
• Researches the technical equipment and workflow, standards & best practices to maintain an up-to-date research and production environment.
• Develop technical demonstrations for training and research purposes, i.e. safety orientation, sound stage techniques, etc.
• Provide one-to-one and group demonstrations as required.
• Help students with equipment related problems.
• Consult with faculty members regarding equipment or materials required
• Ensure adequate equipment or supplies are available for required classes
• Ensure consumables are restocked in a timely manner.

Media Crib (General)

• Receives, stores, and issues video cameras, materials, and equipment.
• Issues media crib equipment to students, faculty and instructors and maintains records of equipment issued and returned, manually or using computer.
• Prepares periodic inventory and maintains perpetual inventory of video equipment in the media crib, manually or using a computer.
• Reporting regularly to the Business Manager with items that are requiring repair, and items that are not returned to the media crib.
• Keeping the media crib and equipment log updated with items taken out of service and adding any new items.
• Maintain and provide student orientation to the use of the equipment loaned out of media crib.

Procedures & Safety

• Develop and post studio procedures that comply with the university’s safety policies and procedures.
• Exercise good judgment with regard to studio safety and exhibit knowledge of safety practices in the studios at all times.
• Maintain WHMIS sheets so that they are readily available for reference by faculty or students.
• Develop and document a schedule of regular inspection and maintenance of tools and equipment.
• Report all safety incidents to the Office of the Director.
• Supervise and guide students in the video area on safety procedures, and proper functioning of equipment
• Assist in establishing procedures and a schedule for student monitors to do basic service.
• Coordinate access controls in alignment with operational requirements, security protocols, and institutional policies.
• Monitor compliance with studio policies and procedures, and take appropriate action, including restricting access when standards are not met.
• Research new equipment, procedures, and sustainability practices as requested by the Office of the Director, Faculty, or self-directed.

Administration

• Process purchasing requisitions, visa orders, petty cash orders using established purchasing procedures.
• Research suppliers for quotes and pricing on materials as needed.
• Maintain and document inventory of equipment, tools and supplies in the sound stage and provide documentation to the Office of the Director as requested.
• Identify needs for repair or replacement of equipment that exceed technician skills or ability.
• Make recommendations to the Office of the Director with respect to equipment needs including major repairs or replacement.
• Provide, in a timely manner, information required for strategic planning or reporting as requested by the Office of the Director.
• Attend training/orientations sessions as required to perform duties of the position.
• Stay up to date on evolving video techniques.
• In conjunction with the Office of the Director, sets the video studio schedule and ensures proper information on scheduling, studio use, and safety is communicated to students and staff.
• Train, supervise, assign duties, and schedule hours for student workers.
• Advise on renovations within the video and sound stage area on an as needed basis. Ie: meet with project managers, and facilitate use of space and storage in accordance with renovation timelines.
• Work with physical plant and the office of the director regarding maintenance, renovation, or construction projects.
• Perform additional duties as required.
