The Opportunity

CIFAR is seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Senior Financial Officer to join our Finance team for a 14-month parental leave coverage contract.

Reporting to the Director, Finance, you will play a critical role in ensuring the integrity and accuracy of CIFAR's financial reporting, supporting organizational decision-making, and maintaining strong financial controls. This position is ideal for an experienced accounting professional who enjoys both hands-on financial operations and contributing to process improvements that enhance organizational effectiveness.

As a key member of the Finance team, you will prepare monthly and quarterly financial reporting, oversee researcher compensation processes, support donor and government reporting requirements, and collaborate with colleagues across the organization to ensure financial information is accurate, timely, and meaningful. You will work with the PCAIS (Pan-Canadian AI Strategy) and CAISI (Canadian AI Safety Institute) staff to complete monthly Cash Flow reports and other reports required by the Federal government.

Key Responsibilities & Impact:

Financial Reporting & Analysis


  • Prepare monthly financial statements, reconciliations, and supporting analyses to ensure accurate and timely reporting.

  • Analyze financial results, including budget-to-actual variances, and support donor and management reporting.

  • Contribute to quarterly and year-end financial reporting that informs organizational decision-making.

Financial Operations & Compliance


  • Lead researcher compensation and other key financial processes, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and excellent stakeholder service.

  • Support the annual audit, charitable filings, government reporting, and other compliance requirements.

  • Maintain the integrity of financial data through reconciliations and ongoing monitoring of financial activity.

Process Improvement & Collaboration


  • Identify opportunities to strengthen financial systems, processes, and internal controls.

  • Lead or support initiatives that improve efficiency, accuracy, and scalability within the Finance function.

  • Collaborate with colleagues across CIFAR and external partners to support organizational priorities and reporting requirements.

About You

You are a collaborative and detail-oriented accounting professional who enjoys turning complex financial information into accurate, meaningful reporting. You combine strong technical expertise with a continuous improvement mindset and thrive in a mission-driven environment.

You bring:


  • A degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.

  • At least five years of progressive full-cycle accounting experience.

  • Strong knowledge of financial reporting, account reconciliations, and accounting principles.

  • Experience with accounting software such as QuickBooks and advanced Excel and/or Google Sheets skills.

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills, with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

Assets:


  • CPA designation (or progress toward completion).

  • Experience in the nonprofit, charitable, research, higher education, or publicly funded sector.

  • Experience supporting audits, government reporting, and donor-funded programs.

Hiring Salary Range  

$75,293 – $88,580

To ensure fair and equitable pay at CIFAR, placement on the salary range will be based on your years of experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.

Le CIFAR est à la recherche d’un ou une spécialiste responsable, Finances dont le souci du détail et l’esprit d’analyse ont fait leurs preuves. Cette personne se joindra à notre équipe des Finances dans le cadre d’un contrat de remplacement pour congé parental d’une durée de 14 mois.

 

Sous la responsabilité de la directrice, Finances, vous jouerez un rôle essentiel pour assurer l’intégrité et l’exactitude de la communication de l’information financière du CIFAR, soutenir la prise de décision au sein de l’organisation et maintenir des contrôles financiers rigoureux. Ce poste convient parfaitement à une professionnelle ou un professionnel de la comptabilité d’expérience qui souhaite conjuguer la gestion des opérations financières quotidiennes et l’amélioration continue des processus afin de renforcer l’efficacité organisationnelle.

 

En tant que membre clé de l’équipe des Finances, vous préparerez les rapports de communication de l’information financière mensuels et trimestriels, superviserez les processus de rémunération des chercheurs et chercheuses, répondrez aux exigences de communication de l’information aux donateurs et aux gouvernements, et collaborerez avec vos collègues de l’ensemble de l’organisation afin de garantir que l’information financière est exacte, opportune et pertinente. Vous travaillerez avec le personnel de la Stratégie pancanadienne en matière d’IA et de l’Institut canadien de la sécurité de l’IA pour produire les rapports mensuels sur les flux de trésorerie et les autres rapports exigés par le gouvernement fédéral.

Vos responsabilités principales et votre impact

Communication de l’information financière et analyse


  • Préparer des états financiers, des analyses justificatives et des rapprochements mensuels précis et ponctuels;

  • Analyser les résultats financiers, y compris les écarts entre les prévisions budgétaires et les résultats réels, ainsi que participer à la préparation de rapports destinés aux donateurs et à la direction;

  • Contribuer au processus de communication de l’information financière trimestrielle et de fin d’exercice qui oriente les décisions de l’organisation.

 

Opérations financières et conformité


  • Diriger le processus de rémunération des chercheuses et chercheurs et d’autres processus financiers clés, en garantissant l’exactitude, la rapidité et un service irréprochable aux parties prenantes;

  • Apporter son soutien quant à l’audit annuel, aux déclarations relatives aux organismes caritatifs, aux rapports destinés aux gouvernements et aux autres exigences en matière de conformité;

  • Assurer l’intégrité des données financières grâce à des rapprochements et à un suivi continu des activités financières.

 

Amélioration des processus et collaboration


  • Cerner les possibilités de renforcer les systèmes, les processus et les contrôles internes en matière financière;

  • Diriger ou soutenir des initiatives visant à améliorer l’efficacité, la précision et l’évolutivité au sein de la fonction financière;

  • Collaborer avec des collègues de l’ensemble du CIFAR et des partenaires externes afin de répondre aux priorités organisationnelles et aux exigences en matière de communication de l’information. 

Votre profil

En tant que professionnel ou professionnelle de la comptabilité à l’esprit collaboratif et au sens du détail, vous aimez transformer l’information financière complexe en rapports précis et pertinents. Vous alliez une solide expertise technique à un état d’esprit d’amélioration continue et vous vous épanouissez dans un environnement axé sur une mission.

 

Vous possédez:


  • Un diplôme en comptabilité, en finance, en administration des affaires ou dans une discipline connexe;

  • Au moins cinq ans d’expérience progressive dans le domaine de la comptabilité, couvrant l’ensemble du cycle comptable;

  • De grandes connaissances en matière de communication de l’information financière, de rapprochement des comptes et de principes comptables;

  • Une maîtrise des logiciels de comptabilité comme QuickBooks et des compétences avancées dans l’utilisation d’Excel ou de Google Sheets;

  • D’excellentes capacités d’analyse, d’organisation et de communication, associées à un sens aigu de la précision et à un souci du détail.

 

Atouts:


  • Titre de CPA (ou en cours d’obtention);

  • Expérience dans les secteurs sans but lucratif, caritatif, de la recherche, de l’enseignement supérieur ou financé par des fonds publics;

  • Expérience dans le domaine des audits, des rapports aux gouvernements et des programmes financés par des donateurs.

La rémunération  

Se situe entre $75,293 – $88,580
