LSO OTHR 3 - Senior Flood Safety Specialist

The Team

The Role

The Senior Flood Safety Specialist is responsible for providing leadership, support, and senior technical expertise on a number of Provincial flood hazard management initiatives. This position works with communities, diking authorities and other Ministries to plan and implement flood preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery actions. The outcome is improved integrated flood management planning aligned with the priority actions of the B.C. Flood Strategy.

This position also reviews applications and supports the Section’s oversight of the Dike Maintenance Act for projects across the province, with an emphasis on understanding the unique hazards, governance and opportunities in the Kootenay-Boundary area. It contributes to or leads flood risk reduction projects and works with complex natural resource issues involving multiple partners and First Nations. Also, it may support WLRS roles in flood response coordination under the Provincial Flood Emergency Plan.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience Requirements

• A bachelor’s degree in natural resource management or related field (e.g., Forestry, Geography, Hydrologic Engineering etc.) plus three (3) or more years’ recent related experience working in a natural resource discipline.

• An equivalent combination of education and experience/training may be considered.

• Registered, or immediately eligible (within 6 months) for registration, with the British Columbia professional association as required by the specialty area (e.g., Association of BC Forest Professionals, Institute of Agrologists, Engineers and Geoscientists B.C.).

Preference may be given to applicants with demonstrated experience in the following:

• Technical water related management (e.g., conducting or guiding hydrological assessments, geotechnical or river design, fluvial / coastal geomorphology, flood risk assessments, flood mitigation plans etc.)

• Flood or geohazard mapping

• Steep creek (debris flow/ flood) hazard assessment and mitigation

• Statutory decision making with respect to water or public safety

• Managing complex projects

• Emergency response

About this Position:

This is a temporary, full time opportunity until March 31, 2027. This position may be extended or become permanent.

This position can be based in any Natural Resource Sector office in the Kootenay Boundary Region. The locations listed above are to assist applicants in searching for this opportunity and are not a complete list of locations.

Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work two (2) or more days at home per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
