Job Summary Common Sense Oncology (CSO) believes that we can do better for people with cancer. Based at the Sinclair Cancer Research Institute at Queen's University, CSO is a global network of more than 2,300 oncologists, researchers, patient advocates, and other cancer care stakeholders who are dedicated to advancing high quality, compassionate, and innovative cancer care that is focused on the outcomes the matter to patients and health systems. CSO works collaboratively with people who have lived experience, as well as organizations and regulators in the cancer field, to ensure that patient needs and outcomes are at the centre of cancer research, cancer care delivery, and cancer systems policy. Reporting to the Managing Director, the Communications and Engagement Officer is responsible for executing the communication strategy to raise awareness of CSO among our key audiences and to foster engagement with our key partners. The incumbent's responsibilities include: planning and creation of high-quality and engaging content across all communications channels to help advance our strategic plan; proactively seeking out media opportunities, coordinating interviews, and conducting media monitoring; ongoing management and development of the CSO website; working collaboratively with the CSO team to plan and execute events and initiatives that increase member and stakeholder engagement with CSO's mission and projects; helping to advance CSO's fundraising and grant initiatives, and identifying opportunities to position CSO-affiliated clinician-scientists as thought leaders in cancer care transformation both in Canada and around the world. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:- Develops and implements internal and external communications plans that advance the profile and strategic objectives of Common Sense Oncology.
- Undertakes stakeholder mapping and communication channel development to ensure CSO best reaches its key audiences and potential partners.
- Independently researches and monitors the cancer research and cancer care stakeholder landscape and media environment to inform communications and engagement activities; makes recommendations regarding emerging issues or opportunities for CSO to contribute to cancer-related narratives and conversations.
- Leads the development of high quality written, graphic, and video content for CSO newsletters, media releases, social media, website, slide decks, and other digital and print platforms.
- Ensures all communications products adhere to CSO brand guidelines.
- Identifies opportunities for earned media coverage and develops media pitches, op-eds, etc.
- Leads the development of CSO's website, and has responsibility for the day-to-day management of the website and social media channels.
- Develops media releases, key messages, correspondence, presentations, and speaking notes.
- Proactively develops and manages a content calendar for CSO communications, ensuring that we stay visible and relevant to both our membership and external key audiences.
- Implements and maintains a database/CRM to track CSO membership and stakeholder engagement
- Works with the Managing Director and CSO leadership to develop and implement a membership growth and engagement plan, along with supporting tactics.
- Develops and tracks analytics and prepares reports on the performance of communications tactics as well as membership and stakeholder engagement activities; proposes changes for continuous improvement in communications and engagement activities.
- Manages the strategic planning and execution of CSO events as a key part of the communications and engagement strategy. These include CSO's annual meeting, webinars, invited talks, panel discussions, and engagement events in conjunction with major international oncology meetings.
- Identifies opportunities for CSO engagement with external organizations and stakeholders, including opportunities for CSO to engage in and influence dialogues around improving cancer care and research, and to advance CSO-affiliated clinician-scientists as thought leaders.
- Support CSO's fundraising and grant application efforts by researching prospective donors, Grantmakers, and government funding programs; and by writing and developing donor-facing communications
- Undertake other duties as required in support of CSO.
- A bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, journalism, health sciences, or a related field.
- Five years prior experience in communications, marketing, fundraising, advocacy, or a related field. Experience working in science communications or health research sector is considered an asset.
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, and strong attention to detail.
- Ability to prioritize and multi-task while working on multiple projects at any given time.
- Ability to work independently and within a collaborative team.
- Ability to think and work creatively, and to foster a creative, results-driven environment.
- Tech-savvy with a keen understanding of digital media.
- Ability to create engaging and sharable content for social media.
- Graphic design, video editing, and website skills are an asset.

- Excellent time management, problem solving and project management skills, with the ability to ensure projects are completed and executed within appropriate timelines.
- The ability to function co-operatively and effectively in a team-oriented environment and to liaise with staff from other Queen's units and outside organizations.
- Advanced computer skills including advanced knowledge of word processing software including Microsoft Office, graphic design software, website management tools, mass email management tools, online learning platforms and familiarity with spreadsheet and database programs. Ability to learn new software packages as required.
- Determine priorities within the constraints of demanding workload. Decide how to best coordinate time and effort between various tasks.
- Resolve administrative problems within guidelines and redirect more complex problems to senior staff.
- Determine appropriate responses to inquiries and decide when new information calls for further action.
- Determine how best to promote an event or increase awareness of CSO's activities in the media.
- Determine when an issue may be controversial and consult senior staff for guidance.
- Determine and manage relevant projects/programs of strategic importance such as campaigns and special initiatives.
- Determine necessary and appropriate content for various written, social and digital communications as assigned, including brochures, websites, email newsletters, speeches, presentations, etc.
