The Department of Cell & Systems Biology at the University of Toronto invites applications for a Research Associate (Limited Term) for a two (2) year term appointment. The anticipated start date is May 2026.

The Research Associate will be intrinsically involved in research projects where they contribute, by way of their academic expertise, to the projects directed by the principal investigator Professor Jennifer Mitchell. The Research Associate will perform projects in the lab of Prof. Jennifer Mitchell in the Department of Cell and Systems Biology on the regulation of gene expression by mechanical signals occurring in the uterus and myometrial smooth muscle cells during pregnancy and labour. The Research Associate will perform and analyse stretch experiments, transcriptomes, conduct chromatin analysis and immunofluorescence, construct molecular reporters and tag endogenous genes. The Research Associate will construct fusions to signalling and transcriptional regulatory proteins to modulate their expression. In addition, the Research Associate will perform large-scale genetic screening and phenotypic assays such as CRISPR targeting screens and cell viability, gene expression and response to mechanical cues.

The Research Associate will also be responsible for record keeping of the project research, tracking spending on reagents, ordering chemicals and reagents as required and contributing to the training of other lab members in techniques within the scope of their expertise.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

~ Candidate must have a Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics.

Experience:

Minimum of 3 years experience in cell culture and Yap signalling mechanisms.
Expertise with myometrial smooth muscle stretch experiments and Degron Tagging of endogenous genes.

Skills:

Demonstrated academic and hands-on research experience in the impact of mechanical signaling on chromatin architecture and gene expression.
Experience designing and executing complex experimental workflows, utilizing state of the art techniques including CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing, ATAC-seq and RNA-seq.
Experience in carrying out research with a high degree of independence.
Experience in laboratory operations and training others (graduate students) in overall lab to ensure efficient and productive research environment.
Strong data analysis, record-keeping, and documentation skills.
Ability to manage laboratory inventories, track reagent usage, and order supplies.
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communications skills.

Additional skills:

Leadership and ability to direct and supervisor graduate students.
Interpersonal skills to facilitate effective collaboration within the research group.
