Prior to May 1 2022 the University required all students faculty staff and visitors (including contractors) to declare their COVID-19 vaccination status and provide proof that they were fully vaccinated or had an approved accommodation to engage in in-person University activities. Job Summary
A Brief Overview
Reporting to the Director Student Services the Academic Accommodations & Considerations Advisor is responsible for the implementation and administration of policies and procedures related to student requests for academic accommodation and / or academic consideration within Smith Engineering. The Advisor supports the academic transition from secondary to post-secondary education recognizing that academic accommodation requirements may differ. They recommend appropriate supports and resources to incoming students and collaborate with the Smith Engineering Wellness Team to develop and deliver transition- and support-based programming tailored specifically for accommodated students.
As a member of the Student Services Team the incumbent works closely with the Associate Dean (Academic) faculty Student Wellness Services and Students Accessibility Services and other academic advisors. The Advisor works with stakeholders to coordinate and facilitate requests for academic considerations academic and medical leaves academic accommodation arrangements and / short-term academic accommodations for students facing difficult or challenging personal circumstances. This position also liaises with the Chaplains Office Sexual Violence Resource Officer and the Office of the Vice-Provost and Dean of Student Affairs as required to ensure the timely and professional provision of student support services. Job Description
What you will do
Provides subject matter expertise for complex cases in which students are facing disability-related functional impacts to their ability to achieve academic objectives.
Participates in ongoing review of the accommodation protocol makes recommendations for improvement and supports the implementation of changes.
Reviews medical and/or psychoeducational assessments identifies and reviews available options for accommodation and/or consideration ensures proper documentation consults with faculty members on students behalf and implements appropriate accommodation and/or consideration plan.
Builds relationships with students parents faculty and other university departments and services to facilitate accommodation and/or consideration requests.
Interprets and applies legislation and government policies in the accommodation process for students with disabilities.
Conducts interviews with students to obtain information about how they experience their disability in the academic context.
Synthesizes and communicates accessibility and accommodations processes to students staff and faculty.
Provides advice to faculty and staff about the impact of a students disability or accommodation on academic performance.
Supports academic transition from secondary to post-secondary where academic accommodation requirements may differ and recommends appropriate supports and resources.
Provides academic advising for students requiring consideration including academic program planning course selection degree requirements faculty regulations policies and procedures.
Addresses complaints from students parents faculty and staff regarding accommodations and/or considerations or the accommodation process.
Participates in data analysis of accommodation and/or consideration requests to identify trends concerns or issues.
Other duties as required in support of the department and/or unit.
Required Education
~ Masters Degree or addition requires a professional designation certification or other qualification or on-going learning to remain ahead of changes in technology or emerging fields.
Required Experience
More than 3 years and up to and including 5 years of experience.
Experience working at a post-secondary education institution considered an asset.
Experience advising students considered an asset.
Knowledge of relevant laws regulations policies standards and/or guidelines considered an asset.
Consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.
