MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:

Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture or Agribusiness or other relevant degree (M.Sc. preferred) with extensive knowledge of current management of livestock and crop production enterprises in a research environment is required.
More than 5 years of experience in an agricultural business, particularly livestock management with a minimum of three years in a leadership role requiring responsibility for budget, financial planning, project management and human resource oversight is required.
Financial and biological analysis and understanding of livestock and crop production systems, as well as public oriented research and education/outreach facilities is required.
Competency with computers required and experience using spreadsheets, word processing and record keeping programs. Knowledge of Aurora, VIP, EPIC and Concur would be an asset.
Knowledge of proper maintenance of agricultural equipment and facilities is required.
Knowledge and experience with correct livestock handling techniques and familiarity with the recommended codes of practice for care and handling of farm animals is required.
Knowledge of livestock research and management of projects is required.
Must be able to plan, provide strong analysis and to make sound decisions.
Understanding and application of the role of university facilities focused to meet the research/teaching/outreach needs of the Faculty.
Maintains a safe and healthy work and learning environment including training and compliance with appropriate health and safety procedures and whole-farm biosecurity protocols to protect human health, feed and food safety and animal health.
Leads the unit and is accountable for all decisions, including but not limited to staff acquisitions, dismissals, disciplinary actions, professional development and training.
Sets the optimal organizational structures and staffing levels to meet research, education and outreach goals effectively and efficiently while staying within budgetary constraints.
Develops and nurtures a respectful and safe work and learning environment where employee job satisfaction within efficient and effective job performance is a valued asset.
Evaluates and records the performance of staff members and provides regular feedback to ensure objectives are met.
Recommends staff complement increases or decreases to ensure the staff complement supports operational and strategic goals while maintaining safety and animal care.
Ensures appropriate orientation and training is offered and recorded for new and as needed, to existing staff members.
Develops and manages operational plans for the Glenlea Research Station (GRS).
Consults with and advises the Dean on short- and long-term strategic visions for operating, upgrading and maintaining the Glenlea Research Station as a state-of-the-art complementary facility to meet research, education and outreach needs of the Faculty and the University.
Work with Physical Plant and Animal Care Office on maintenance of facilities.
Coordination of staff, facilities and equipment to meet operational, research, education and outreach needs
Ensures inventories of crops, feeds, and livestock are current and determines limits in relation to research/instructional needs, offsetting operational budget and available resources.
Facilitates, organizes and conducts Station related instructional activities in GRS classrooms, Farm & Food Discovery Centre and facilities.
Consults with units and facility supervisors, appropriate department heads or designates, researchers and Administrative Assistants to accomplish this effectively.
Requests regularly scheduled budget reviews, conducts financial analysis and submits reports.
Proposes recommendations for improved and/or innovative procedures, consistent with program goals and faculty objectives to enhance operating efficiency and revenue, striving to meet projections and to ensure compliance with University policies and procedures.
Oversees preparation of semi-annual reports of activities, costs of operations and financial analysis for use by the Faculty and to facilitate benchmarking and future planning.
