One-year contract.

Purpose

The UX Developer will join the Brain-Heart Interconnectome Research Program team, a $109 million initiative funded by the CFREF (Canada First Research Excellence Fund). This innovative program will transform the prevention and treatment of brain-heart interconnected conditions, improving the health and quality of life of Canadians and people worldwide.

In this role, the UX Developer will primarily be responsible for bridging the gap between design and development in a scientific context, translating user experience design into responsive, accessible, and intuitive interfaces which will be implemented to the ARCHIMEDES infrastructure. The portal is a consortium effort led by a range of partner organizations, designed to provide a user-friendly data platform with centralized access to curated brain-heart data, data resources, analytic tools and open science archiving capabilities. The portal will provide end users with cutting-edge data curation (e.g., access to multiple data sources, linkage capabilities, and analytic tools), a data repository, and data management and governance resources.

Reporting to the Chairs of ARCHIMEDES and working closely with the ARCHIMEDES Steering Committee, the technical team based out of McGill University, and key platform stakeholders, the UX Developer will contribute to the improvement of the user interface by integrating user feedback into the current platform infrastructure. This will include improvements to the platform design and workflow. The UX Developer will assess the current infrastructure and provide innovative and intuitive solutions and align technical initiatives with long-term business objectives to contribute to ARCHIMEDES' strategic direction, strategies, and goals. The UX Developer will also facilitate collaboration between diverse organizations, patients, researchers, and stakeholder groups to collect an array of feedback.

Key responsibilities

Collect scientific user feedback to develop high-quality wireframe designs for review by the internal ARCHIMEDES team.

Understanding of APIs and system infrastructure to implement improvements agreed upon by the ARCHIMEDES team.

Translate UX/UI designs and wireframes into high-quality, functional front-end code

Ensure interfaces are accessible, responsive, and performant across devices and browsers.

Implement best practices in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create interactive and engaging user experiences.

Conduct usability testing and gather feedback to improve existing interfaces.

Work closely with backend developers to integrate APIs and deliver cohesive user experience.

Advocate for user-centered design principles throughout the product lifecycle.

Mandatory qualifications

• 3+ years of experience in front-end development with a focus on user experience.
• Proficiency in HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript (ES6+), and frameworks such as React, Vue, or Angular.
• Strong understanding of UX principles, interaction design, and accessibility standards (WCAG).
• Experience with design tools like Figma, Sketch, or Adobe XD.
• Familiarity with version control systems like Git.
• Ability to work in a dynamic, cross-functional team environment.
• Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
• Understanding performance optimization techniques for web applications.

Desired qualifications

Experience collecting, analyzing and implementing user feedback.

Fluency in French is an asset but not mandatory.

Personal suitability

Strong attention to detail.

Demonstrated ability to work independently. Self-motivated and proactive in solving technical problems.

Excellent interpersonal relations and communications skills, sound judgment, and ability to foster a cooperative work environment.

Ability to work under pressure and organize his/her work to meet target objectives and deadlines.

Some flexibility in working hours, in addition to accepting occasional travel.

Work environment

This is a hybrid position based at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI). It is expected that the successful candidate will be onsite at UOHI approximately 2 days per week and may work remotely when not at UOHI or travel to partner sites.
