Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada and on the territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosauneeand the Wendat Peoples, the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science at Toronto Metropolitan University [www.torontomu.ca] (formerly Ryerson University) invites applications for the position of Associate Dean, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. During the term of appointment as Associate Dean, the incumbent shall be an “associate member” of the Toronto Metropolitan Faculty Association (TFA) in accordance with the TFA Collective Agreement. The processes related to the recruitment and selection of the successful candidate for the Associate Dean position are governed by the Appointment of Academic Administrators Policy and Procedures (the “AAA Policy”). Consistent with other senior university appointments, the successful candidate will receive an administrative stipend for the period of appointment as Associate Dean.
The Associate Dean, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies provides academic leadership and strategic oversight for graduate education and postdoctoral training across the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science (FEAS). The Associate Dean advances academic excellence, student and postdoctoral experience, and research integration across programs, ensuring alignment with the Faculty’s strategic plan and the priorities of the Yeates School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (YSGPS). The role fosters collaboration, innovation, and inclusivity in graduate and postdoctoral education, while maintaining the integrity and competitiveness of FEAS programs locally and internationally.

Strategic Leadership and Program DevelopmentOversee the development, implementation, and review of new and existing graduate programs, post-graduate diplomas, interdisciplinary graduate programs and international partnerships in collaboration with departments, YSGPS, and other related offices in TMU. Lead the strategic planning and continuous improvement of all graduate and postdoctoral programs within FEAS.

• Graduate Student and Postdoctoral ExperienceChampion initiatives that enhance graduate student and postdoctoral success, wellbeing, belonging, and inclusion.
• Governance and Academic OperationsProvide academic oversight of admissions, enrollment targets (both domestic and international), and graduate funding allocations in consultation with the Dean and YSGPS.
• Mentorship, Capacity Building, and Leadership DevelopmentMentor and support Associate Chairs (Graduate), Graduate Program Directors, and Graduate Program Administrators across departments.
• Funding and External EngagementDevelop and maintain competitive funding packages for research-focused graduate students to attract and retain top talent.
• Research Integration and Postdoctoral AffairsIn collaboration with the Associate Dean, Research and External Partnerships, support access to research space, resources, and facilities for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
• Equity, Diversity, and InclusionAdvance equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility in all aspects of graduate and postdoctoral education.

Some teaching will be required.
The successful candidate will be a tenured faculty member who holds a terminal degree in the field of engineering or architectural science or related areas and demonstrates excellence in teaching, SRC and service activities and will further present evidence of:

• experience or demonstrable capacity in managing a large portfolio of academic administrative matters;
• a commitment to student’s personal, academic and professional success;
• experience in curriculum design and implementation;
• familiarity with pedagogical practices, SRC, and operational issues in the University;
• a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) including an understanding of EDI principles and evidence of application of those principles, or clearly defined plans of how EDI principles will be applied and promoted in research and teaching;
• a commitment to excellence in teaching and learning;
• an ability and willingness to work effectively in a team-oriented, unionized environment and to assume and maintain a broad perspective that is inclusive of the diverse units within the Faculty; an understanding of the Faculty’s and University’s strategic priorities with a demonstrated ability to integrate them into the duties and responsibilities of this position.
