CMHC, Crisis Support Worker

Salary Range: $59,931.74 To $70,575.60 Annually

Position Summary Reporting to the Program Supervisor, the CMHC Crisis Support Worker will support individuals in a short-term residential setting who are experiencing a mental health and/or addiction crisis and who are in conflict with the criminal justice system. The program is designed to divert persons from incarceration, the justice system, and/or unnecessary hospitalization by providing voluntary community crisis accommodation and support.

The role involves coordinating services, advocating on behalf of clients, and developing plans to support recovery and stabilization. The worker will de‑escalate and stabilize initial crises, connect clients to services, and promote long‑term community living that addresses health and well‑being.

Duties and Responsibilities

Administer naloxone when indicated and complete required training on overdose recognition, nasal spray or injection administration, and emergency protocols.

Provide support to individuals with serious mental health and/or addiction challenges, including crisis mediation, advocacy, and coordination of services with mental health, addictions, and justice partners.

Maintain a conducive environment that facilitates psychological stabilization and offers person‑centered support 24/7.

Conduct preliminary assessment, intake, and admission processes.

Develop and implement individual person‑centered service plans that address immediate and short‑term needs.

Implement recovery‑based strategies in partnership with clients.

Collaborate with community partners (mental health and addiction service providers, justice partners, police, courts, landlords, primary care, family members) to facilitate client recovery and reintegration.

Provide crisis support and counseling.

Maintain accurate records and statistical information as required by agency standards.

Support appropriate medication use.

Perform light housekeeping duties as needed.

Adhere to the Health & Safety Program and the Client Safety Framework to promote client safety.

Demonstrate a strong commitment to quality care and service delivery based on SHIP’s mission and values.

Execute additional duties as delegated by Management.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Counseling, Psychology, Health Services, or related field.

Minimum of 3 years’ experience in mental health crisis management and/or addiction counseling.

Minimum of 3 years’ experience supporting individuals experiencing homelessness.

Membership or eligibility with the Ontario Association of Social Workers, College of Registered Psychotherapists, or equivalent is an asset.

Experience with OCANS, Columba’s, or fullIndividual and group counselling skills is considered an asset.

Demonstrated knowledge of serious mental illness, concurrent disorders, and/or dual diagnosis, and experience with intake services.

Proven experience working with the mental health population and collaborating with partners and community resources.

Knowledge and commitment to psychosocial rehabilitation and recovery‑oriented practices, including mental health and addictions/justice support services.

Understanding of psychiatric symptomology and medication, as well as suicide assessment and intervention.

Proven ability to work with multiple internal teams to create successful synergies.

Capacity to work with minimal direction or supervision.

Highly flexible with solid interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a diverse environment.

Excellent assessment, risk management, and crisis intervention skills.

Expertise in collaboration with health‑care services.

Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

Valid driver’s licence, vehicle, and adequate insurance coverage.

Valid certification in First Aid & CPR.

Training in ASIST and CPI.

Reporting Function The CMHC Crisis Support Worker reports directly to the Program Supervisor and does not hold supervisory responsibilities.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Shift work (Sunday–Thursday 11:30 pm–7:30 am) with the ability to work overtime where required.

Ability to sit for prolonged periods.

Ability to answer telephone calls and use general computer applications.

Ability to lift up to 20 lbs (products, documents, etc.).

Ability to react and respond quickly during escalated situations to ensure client and staff safety.

Vehicle travel to community sites for visits and walk‑throughs.
