171811 - Casual Case Aide - Department of Social Development and Seniors

Case Aides support the delivery of complex and challenging services to Child Protection clients as outlined in provincial child protection legislation and related legislation. Support Social Workers in delivering mandated services outlined in Provincial Child Protection Legislation. This includes gathering and presenting information related to child abuse and neglect in collaboration with and under the direction of the social worker.

Duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Develop positive working relationships with parents and children;
  • Support Social Worker in the development and implementation of Case Plans by gathering and presenting information, and through delivering services and support to the clients;
  • Gather information using a variety of methods to provide to Social Worker to support clinical assessments;
  • Attend interviews with social worker with children, parents, caregivers, and others; provide support such as observation and documentation of the meeting;
  • Observe and record information in videotaped interviews with police and social workers for children who have experienced physical, emotional or sexual abuse and complete summaries;
  • Schedule and conduct family supervised/semi supervised visits, including Court ordered visitations;
  • Attend appointments with children and provide information about the child to the clinician;
  • Gather information and provide to Social Worker and Supervisor on an ongoing basis to support case plan decision making, through contacting collaterals and seeking updates on file/ or through direct observation;
  • Support case plan implementation by preparing referrals as directed by the Social Worker, support client participation, follow up with service provider;
  • Participate in case review meetings, change of legal conferences, and case conferences with Social Worker;
  • Assist Social Worker to complete administrative tasks related to a child’s entrance into care of the Director to enhance service delivery and experience for child;
  • Prepare for and present evidence in court;
  • Appear in court on previous child protection matter;
  • Assist in preparing legal case summaries and client court reports;
  • Support the Social Worker by preparing financial records/receipts pertaining to clients and their needs;
  • Other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree with a Major in Social Sciences with considerable related experience, or college diploma in human services field with extensive related experience. Prior experience in child protection is preferred.
  • Experience working directly with families, children and youth.
  • Good oral and written skills, as well as computer literacy and the ability to manage time effectively.
  • Knowledge of child development, as well as the impact of abuse or neglect on the child and family.
  • Knowledge of family preservation, child development concepts, and behavior management skills.
  • Knowledge of community resources, including but not limited to Social Support, Mental Health and Addiction Services, school systems, police, housing, medical/pediatric services, counselling agencies, Family violence prevention, shelters, etc.
  • Ability to form relationships with parents and children.
  • Knowledge of provincial child protection legislation, the Adoption Act, an Act respecting First Nations, Inuit, and Metis children, youth and families, Child and Family Services policies and protocols, including those related to Foster Care, Residential Services, and the Youth in Care Network.
  • Knowledge of inter-generational trauma in the Indigenous community including historical trauma due to colonization, residential schools and 60’s Scoop.
  • Must have knowledge of family systems /dynamics.
  • Ability to be independent as well as work in a team setting and collaboration with other service providers.
  • The employee is required, as a condition of employment, to provide a motor vehicle for the purposes of carrying out employment functions as well as a valid PEI driver’s license. The requirement is subject to review every 12 months as per UPSE Civil Collective Agreement.
  • Good previous work and attendance record, and an acceptable criminal record check, vulnerable sector check and child protection check.

  • Conflict resolution and problem-solving skills, as well as leadership and resourcefulness.
  • Advocacy skills for clients.
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries with clients.
  • Ability to prioritize and work independently.
  • Adherence to confidentiality.
  • Trauma Informed approach.
  • Deep understanding of family dynamics, addictions, mental health and trauma.
