Lead Software Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Lead Software Engineer based in Canada.

This is a senior full-stack engineering opportunity focused on building high-traffic consumer web experiences and supporting SEO and growth initiatives. You will take ownership of features from technical discovery and design through deployment, maintenance, and continuous improvement. The role combines strong front-end expertise with solid back-end engineering, giving you broad influence across the product development lifecycle. You’ll work closely with Product and Engineering leadership to turn ambiguous requirements into practical technical solutions and measurable outcomes. Success requires strong technical judgment, the ability to balance speed and quality, and confidence operating with significant autonomy. You’ll contribute to an Agile engineering environment where collaboration, accessibility, performance, and code quality are highly valued. The position also offers opportunities to mentor peers and provide technical leadership on important initiatives.

Accountabilities

• Own software features end-to-end, from initial discovery, technical design, and scoping through production deployment, maintenance, and iteration.
• Develop and enhance high-traffic consumer-facing web applications using React, TypeScript, and modern JavaScript technologies.
• Design, build, and maintain reliable back-end services and APIs using Java and Spring Boot.
• Translate ambiguous product requirements into clear technical approaches, implementation plans, and realistic delivery timelines.
• Make informed technical trade-offs while proactively managing scope and negotiating deliverables with Product and Engineering stakeholders.
• Work closely with Product Managers and Engineering Leads to align technical execution with business and product objectives.
• Collaborate with UX Designers and Marketing stakeholders when needed to ensure cohesive and effective user experiences.
• Maintain high standards for code quality, application performance, accessibility, reliability, and maintainability.
• Participate in Agile ceremonies and contribute to improving engineering processes, development practices, and team effectiveness.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to other engineers while helping establish strong engineering standards.
• Support modern development practices including automated testing, CI/CD, and continuous delivery.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional experience as a Full-Stack Software Engineer, with significant depth in front-end development.
• Strong hands-on experience building production applications with React and TypeScript or modern JavaScript.
• Solid back-end development experience with Java and Spring Boot.
• Proven ability to independently own significant features or initiatives from technical design through production deployment.
• Strong experience estimating engineering work, managing scope, prioritizing effectively, and making sound technical trade-offs.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate directly with Product Managers, Engineering Leads, and cross-functional stakeholders.
• Experience developing and maintaining production-quality web applications within an Agile environment.
• Previous experience as a Technical Lead, Lead Engineer, or technical owner of major engineering initiatives is preferred.
• Experience working on SEO-focused or high-traffic consumer web applications is an advantage.
• Experience collaborating with UX Design and Marketing teams is beneficial.
• Experience mentoring engineers or providing technical guidance within an engineering team is preferred.
• Familiarity with web performance optimization, accessibility standards, and modern web development best practices.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and contemporary software engineering practices.
• Strong ownership mindset, autonomy, problem-solving ability, and comfort navigating ambiguous technical challenges.
