Summary

While respecting and embodying Raven’s Zero Waste and community building philosophy throughout, focus of the Operations Manager (OM) is leading Warehouse, Bottle Depot and Sort Line operations in accordance with all relevant contracts and business programs.

In collaboration with the Yard & Logistics Manager and Assistant Manager, the OM is primarily responsible for overseeing the processing of recyclable material from collecting to baling, including supporting sales of recyclable products.

This position requires a high level of leadership, commitment, problem solving, creativity, and flexibility.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Administrative
• In collaboration with the ED, provide fiscally responsible management of the Warehouse, Depot, Sort Line and PaperSave budgets, as well as the budgets for maintenance and repair of equipment and building by:
* Working with the ED to secure financial contributions from local governments and to bid on tenders that arise for the management of recyclable material.
* Maintaining a current understanding of commodity prices and markets and negotiating new arrangements with brokers when necessary.
* Managing all warehouse paperwork, including invoices, timesheets and data entry.
• Communicate and liaise with commercial haulers, community depots and transfer station personnel to ensure product coming to Raven is of the highest possible quality and to problem solve issues that arise from time to time.
• Participate actively on various joint committees as required to maintain ongoing relationships of the Raven team.
Equipment and building maintenance
• Ensuring equipment and building are maintained to a standard that maximizes the life of all assets by:
• Weekly monitoring of (mobile) equipment of Warehouse, Depot, Sort Line and PaperSave (ESS).
• Weekly monitoring of the building, facilities and utilities.
• Documenting maintenance, repairs and areas of concern by filing Repair Reports (RR) and Status Reports (ESR) amongst others.
• Establish, monitor and manage a preventative maintenance plan.
• Collaborating with other Raven managers to ensure recommendations made during monitoring are addressed.
• Overseeing the equipment and building maintenance personnel and contractors and performing repairs and maintenance when necessary.
• Ensuring all workers in mentioned departments have appropriate training and experience.

Staff management & labour

• Overseeing all Warehouse, Depot and Sort Line operations, including the PaperSave program, by:
• Managing and providing leadership in all Warehouse, Depot, Sort Line and PaperSave operations-related HR activities including recruitment, training, performance management, team building, conflict management and scheduling shifts.
• Holding regular toolbox meetings with all mentioned departments to direct operations.
• Ensuring that staff have appropriate safety training and supplies (PPE), and that staff follow approved safety procedures in all aspects of their work.
• Identifying opportunities for staff training.
• Mentoring staff towards additional levels of responsibility when appropriate.
• Undertaking the duties and responsibilities of all workers as required.

Making responsible decisions about any changes in operations and staffing needed in response to adverse conditions such as cold weather and equipment failure.

Project management & contractor oversight

• Maintain communication and oversight of all building and equipment maintenance and repair projects by:
• Maintain a list of contractors for building and equipment repair.
• Monitor and manage project budgets.
• Arrange contracts for building and equipment repair and maintenance when necessary.

Ensure that all contractors have the necessary safety training and insurance.

Other duties:

• (Co-)Chair a safety committee with regular meetings.
• Monitor, manage and maintain Health & Safety Standards (COR).
• Maintain records of Health & Safety related issues and solutions.
• Provide input and guidance on Health & Safety related issues.
• Submit Incident and Accident Reports to WCB and follow up if necessary (RTW etc.)
• Support management by writing and/or reviewing protocols and procedures supporting (cost) effective and efficient operations.
• Provide input and guidance for long-term strategic planning.
• Purchase supplies as necessary.
• Ensure messaging about recycling is aligned with other departments.
• Respond to public inquiries and ensure a high level of customer service is provided by all employees.
• Monthly pay-out of donation accounts.
• Monitor general cleaning of departments.
• Monitor adherence of policies by staff.
• Work with the Yard and Logistics Manager to source, collect and process material for Raven’s wood chip boiler throughout the year and ensure there is an adequate supply in advance of boiler season.
• Working Conditions
• • Most administrative work is performed under normal office conditions.
  • Regular use of heavy machinery and mechanical equipment.
  • Regular exposure to temperature extremes between Office, Warehouse, Depot and Yard (PPE provided).
  • Regular exposure to chemicals, odors, fumes and waste materials (PPE provided).
  • Regular exposure to loud working environment (PPE provided).
  • Physical risk associated with site visits, heavy equipment and mechanical equipment and vehicle operation.
  • Frequent problem solving and a high degree of flexibility required.
  • Occasional overtime, evening and weekend hours required.
  • On-call as first point of contact for emergencies related to the building and personnel.
  • Must be able to respond to unforeseen events such as equipment breakdown and short staffing in a timely manner.
    
  Incidental travel to Yukon communities and outside markets.

  • Understanding of workplace safety requirements and legislation, including the Worker’s Compensation & Safety Act, Employment Standards Act and Yukon Human Rights Act.
  • Class 5 Driver’s license
  • Experience with preventative machine maintenance.
  • Ability to oversee and manage a large budget.
