About Us
The Faculty of Science's mission is to be a cornerstone of society's development through the education of students, the creation and dissemination of knowledge, and the establishment of innovative partnerships with industry, government and other educational institutions in the global community.
The Science Careers and Professional Experience team provides career planning support and job search assistance to Science and BMSc students and alumni. Services include job-search skill development, résumé and cover letter reviews, interview practice, and general career exploration. The team also hosts visiting employers for student engagement, provides career and job search workshops, and facilitates the Science Internship Program as well as the co-op programs for the Professional Master Programs - all with the aim of increasing student awareness of potential careers with a degree in Science.
Responsibilities
The Career Services Officer will facilitate a unique and wide range of career services and career development programs for undergraduate and graduate students and alumni, as part of the Science Careers and Professional Experience team, in the Faculty of Science. The role will enhance the best student experience while increasing participation in internship and co-op opportunities, as well as summer and new graduate employment opportunties for all students. The Career Services Officer will identify and establish new relationships with key industry partners and employers to market Science students and will maintain and steward current relationships. The role will work closely and collaborate with the other Career Services Officers on the team to assist students and increase awareness of available support, and to plan and coordinate various related events and reporting as required.
Qualifications
Education:
- Undergraduate Degree in a relevant field
- Undergraduate degree, or courses taken, in a Science/STEM related field is preferred
- Career Development Practitioner Certificate is preferred
Experience:
- 3 years' experience in an academic or industry setting managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Experience liaising and building strong relationships with industry and corporate partners
- Proven sales, marketing, and/or public relations experience with selling a program, product or concept
- Human Resources or career counselling experience, specifically in relation to recruiting highly qualified personnel and providing comprehensive career and job search counselling, résumé development and interview skills is preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- In-depth knowledge related to coaching and mentoring approaches (particularly career and job search coaching, résumé development and interview techniques)
- Ability to source leads, cold call and use other methods to connect with external partners
- Knowledge of science programs and courses and their applicability to the labour market and ability to match this to the needs of students/industry
- Familiarity with best practices for maintaining, seeking out and developing business relationships and partnerships with the ability to generate additional work opportunities
- Familiarity with Human Resources principles and practices
- Ability to assess clients' needs, suggest options, overcome objections, and move forward with partnerships
- Ability to apply career advising knowledge to on-on-one and group interactions
- Ability to source new information resources for clients to seek resolution to challenges through research
- Demonstrated strong leadership and team building skills (collaborating on projects, reaching consensus and keeping others informed)
- Ability to collaborate across internal and external teams to meet common objectives, improve outcomes and support work beyond one's own unit
- Compelling and persuasive communication skills to engage individuals and teams inside and outside the University
- Ability to apply creativity, innovation and resourcefulness to daily work
- Ability to establish rapport with people from diverse backgrounds
- A well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation, facilitation and conflict resolution skills
- Ability to work independently and exercise a high degree of initiative, innovation and good judgment in decision-making
- Customer service skills (listening to determine needs and concerns, building trust, responding tactfully and in a helpful way, referring to others services as needed)
- Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Access), and with database applications (such as Customer Relationship Management applications)
- Strong communication skills including writing, speaking, presenting, listening, asserting, and influencing
- Excellent organizational and time management skills to anticipate, plan, and balance multiple priorities in a dynamic environment
- Ability to work within a flexible schedule to accommodate the Faculty's events and activities
- Must have own transportation with ability to travel to industry partners and employers (mainly in South Western Ontario and the GTA); Valid Class G driver's license required
- Familiarity with University policies and procedures preferred
