Course Description: This course focuses on the analysis of physical evidence based on the principles of analytical chemistry. Students will gain knowledge in the theory and operation of forensically relevant chemical and instrumental techniques used for the analysis of evidentiary items, including drug/alcohol analysis, gunshot residue, explosives, paint analysis, etc. Students will also develop skills relating to the interpretation, limitation, and implications of analytical results in a forensic context. [36L, 36P]

Session: September 1, 2026 – December 31, 2026

Lectures: Thursdays 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM (In-person)

Practicals: Tuesday 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM, 2:00 PM -5:00 PM and 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM (In-person)

Estimated Course Enrolment: 48

Estimated TA Support: 60 hours per two practical sections (total number of assigned hours is dependent on course enrolment and course approvals)

Salary: $55.25 / hour

Qualifications: Successful applicants will have a Masters degree (completed or in progress) in Forensic Science/Chemistry together with appropriate Forensic Chemistry course background for the course to be demonstrated. Prior TA/SIA experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications: Professional designation and/or professional experience in Forensic Chemistry is highly preferred. Knowledge of analytical chemistry/forensic chemistry, previous experience with FTIR, GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, HPLC, ICP-MS, SEM, and general analytical laboratory instrumentation. Preference is given to qualified graduate students registered with SGS, who have in addition, obtained their B.Sc. in Forensic Science at UTM and who work in research labs within the related forensic sub disciplines at UTM.

Duties: Maintain Quercus course site; Coordinate exam prep and printing; Lead delivery of laboratory demonstrations; Supervise group sessions; Consult with students and supervisor; Invigilating tests/exams; Marking of course assignments/tests/exam; Hold office hours; Respond to student queries
