Location: Nelson, BCClassification: Permanent Part-Time

(28 Hours/week confirmed until March 31, 2024)

Nelson CARES Society (NCARES) is a not-for-profit organization that provides programs and initiatives, housing, employment, legal information and support services.

The Advocacy Centre provides legal information and advocacy to low-income residents of the West Kootenay region and supports to victims of relationship and sexual violence.

Job Summary:

This permanent, part-time position reports to the Manager of The Advocacy Centre and the Community Based Victim Services Program Coordinator. The Victim Support Worker provides:

• emotional support, referrals, information related to the justice system,
• advocacy for: o adult victims of violence in relationships and sexual assault, o survivors of childhood physical and sexual abuse, o child and youth victims of physical and sexual abuse, o child and youth witnesses of violence in relationships

Education and Skills:

• Bachelor of Social Work degree, or related post-secondary education, or equivalent training and experience.
• Training in victim services and crisis intervention.
• Significant experience in the area of gender-based violence.
• Experience working with individual clients.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team setting.
• Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
• Understanding of the impact of biases respecting race, class, sex, gender, sexual orientation, dis/abilities is essential.
• Knowledge of the criminal and family justice systems, the Child, Family and Community Services Act and procedures, and social service systems is highly desirable.

Employment Requirements:

• Valid BC Driver's License (minimum Class 5) and vehicle available for work
• Satisfactory Criminal Record check

Compensation: $28.30 plus 10% in lieu of benefits (Grid Level 12, Step 1)

Hours: 28 hours/week confirmed to March 31, 2024; may change in April 2024 depending on funding
