New Directions is a social service agency offering a wide range of resources and services that foster people’s hopes and dreams in their communities .

Honouring Our Journey is one of the many programs within Culture, Education and Training area at New Directions. This service area provides support, healing, education, and life skills to individuals ages 13 and up who have been exploited/trafficked in the sex trade.

We are seeking a skilled, patient, and dynamic educator who is eager to use their skills and compassion to meet the unique needs of a diverse group of youth and adult learners. 

The Classroom Teacher will be responsible for the facilitation of academics; adult and youth classroom instruction for a range of grade 9 -12 level courses that align with Province of Manitoba curriculum, with a primary focus on ELA at all levels, as well as physical education and health; assessing skill levels; developing, reviewing and updating curriculum and ensuring that proper documentation is maintained. The New Directions School Inc operates year-round, offering summer programming and team-building opportunities.

Position shift: Monday to Friday, 8:30a.m. to 4:00p.m.  

Job Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to):

Facilitation of Learning:

• Classroom instruction/teaching responsibilities
• Curriculum and lesson planning; Including but not limited to English Language Arts, and Physical Education & Health.
• Participation in team meetings
• Identify and share learning needs of students and contribute to SSP/IEP development and implementation.
• Commitment to ongoing learning and inclusion of Indigenous and decolonizing pedagogies and approaches in the classroom.
• Taking students out in community for a variety of learning activities

Daily Program: Supervision and Program Culture

• Provide lunch time supervision to students
• Facilitate morning meetings to assess emotional readiness of students, review program guidelines, and discuss scheduling changes, field trips, special events, etc. This may include a morning smudge or sharing circle as needed.
• Maintain accurate observational records and progress notes for each student.
• Work collaboratively with education and case management teams to support student learning and wellbeing.
• Work in partnership with the education team to facilitate meaningful cultural programming that creates opportunities for identity development, community, and a connection to Indigenous ancestry and history.

Successful Candidate Profile:

• A Bachelor of Education degree (B.Ed.), with a valid Manitoba Teacher’s Certificate.
• An understanding of strength-based pedagogies, and an adaptive and dynamic attitude towards teaching, assessment, and student engagement.
• Demonstrates patience, empathy, understanding, and approaches student challenges with curiosity and a non-judgmental approach.
• Ability to demonstrate and participate in physical activities such as walking, jogging, hiking, bicycling, swimming, and other recreational activities; basketball, bowling, etc.
• Experience completing computer-related tasks, including report card writing, documentation, scheduling, and the preparation of instructional materials.
• Proficiency in using classroom technology and software to support instruction and daily job functions, including interactive whiteboards (Smart Boards) and the Microsoft Office Suite.
• Valid First Aid/CPR, Mental Health First Aid, NVCI (Non-Violent Crisis Intervention) and ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills) certifications would be considered an asset.
• Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with access to a safe, reliable vehicle for transporting students to off-site learning locations.

The salary range for this full-time permanent 70-hour bi-weekly position is $34.3238 to $43.2439 per hour (equivalent to $62,469.32 to $78,703.90 per annum), dependent upon education and/or experience of the successful candidate. A full benefits package (which include Health and Dental Benefits, Long Term Disability Benefits, and a Pension Plan) is provided to regular full-time staff. 

The successful candidate will be subject to Criminal Record, Child Abuse Registry, Adult Abuse Registry, and Prior Contact Checks.
