POSITION TITLE: Forestry Wildfire Crew Member (Type 2 or 3)

DEPARTMENT: Wildfire Crew / Fuel Management - Emergency Preparedness Program

SUPERVISOR: Emergency Planning Coordinator

TERMS: Full Time, Term until March 31, 2027 with chance of extension.

Purpose Of Position

The purpose of this position is to provide safe, efficient, and professional wildland fire suppression and wildfire mitigation and preparedness operations working under the direction of the Wildfire Crew Leader.

Duties And Responsibilities

The Forestry Wildfire Crew Member is accountable for:

• Maintaining individual job safety
• Maintaining individual and crew equipment fire line readiness
• Ensuring training certifications are up to date
• Gathering critical information pertinent to daily assignments
• Maintaining a safety-conscious and professional attitude at all times
• Working collaboratively with BCWS personnel, contract crews, and other community partners
• Participating in fuel management, wildfire mitigation project work, and other department projects (e.g., TteS firewood delivery program and FireSmart initiatives)
• Participating in emergency prevention, mitigation, preparedness, and response, and recovery activities
• Participating in wildfire prevention and response community education and awareness events

Forestry Wildfire Crew Member Deliverables Include

• Maintaining full availability for wildfire response (standby and overtime) from May to September, limiting personal leave to essential situations only.
• Maintaining administrative documents including training records and employee timesheets
• Ensuring quick, efficient, and effective wildfire response in accordance with the BCWS Indigenous Initial Response Crew (IIRC) standards
• Adhering to safe work policies and professional conduct at all times
• Adhering to Incident Command System (ICS) protocols

• Participate in all operational job required training courses
• Maintain certifications required for this position

Skills And Abilities

• Physically fit and capable of physical labour
• Capable of navigating rugged terrain in adverse conditions
• Able to carry heavy object (50 lbs) long distances over difficult terrain
• Strong verbal and written communication
• Safety conscious
• Team oriented - works well with others
• GPS and/or compass back country navigation

Certifications

Professional Certification, Education and Experience:

• WorkSafe recognized Basic First Aid Certificate (Formerly known as OFA Level 1) and Transportation Endorsement
• Must hold a valid Class 5 license OR Class 7N license with plans to take the Class 5 Road Test.
• Must provide an acceptable driver’s abstract.
• Acceptable Criminal Record Check

Experience

• Outdoor experience

Assets, But Not Required

• TteS Band Member who meets the required qualifications
• Valid Class 5 unrestricted driver’s license
• Highschool Diploma
• Post secondary forestry or resource management education (in progress or completed)
• Advanced First Aid (formerly Occupational First Aid Level 3) or EMR training
• High level of fitness
• Forestry work experience (e.g., logging, planting, and silviculture)
• Other resource based work experience (e.g., oil and gas, mining, and farming)
• Extensive outdoor and wilderness experience (e.g., hunting, trapping, fishing, and back country activities)
• Wildland firefighting experience
• Volunteer Fire Department experience
• WorkSafe BC recognized Advanced First Aid Certificate (formerly OFA Level 3) or Intermediate First Aid Certificate (formerly OFA Level 2)
• 35 calendar days actively involved in firefighting
• S-230 Intro to Supervision (Single Resource Leader / Introduction to Supervision)
• S-241 Fire Assessment
• S-100 Basic Fire Suppression and Safety or equivalent (Annual Re-currency)
• S-185 Fire Entrapment Avoidance
• ICS 100 Incident Command System 100
• S-211 The Fire Environment of Firefighters / Dispatchers
• S 212 Fire Line Communications or Restricted Radio Operators License
• S 213 Use of Bulldozers and Heavy Equipment
• WHMIS & TDG Certified
• WorkSafe BC recognized Power saw Operator Certificate
• WorkSafe BC Danger Tree Assessor Certificate
• BC Forest Safety Council Faller Certificate

Special Requirements

• Minimum of 18 years of age
• Completed the annual PAR-Q & You self screening assessment
• Pass the WFX-FIT standard for Type 2/3 Wildland Fire Fighter (BCWS) Fitness Test
• Ability to travel if necessary
• Ability to work in high stress environments
• Ability to work overtime and be on standby before and/or after regular work shifts

HOURS OF WORK: 8-hour shifts. Non-normal shifts may be required.

PAY GRADE: Starting at $25.98 - $32.77/hour depending on education & experience
