Job Responsibility:
Summary:
Responsible for the maintenance and reporting of the City's tangible capital assets. Reconcile the tangible capital asset register and ensure that it is kept current. Provide backup to the Accountant I and Accounting Clerk III. Assist the Intermediate Bookkeeper with yearend functions and complete financial reporting schedules for external auditors and Province. Work in conjunction with Accounting/ Budget Clerk and the Manager of Budgets and Capital to review, analyze and record completed capital projects. Other finance related duties assigned by supervisor.
Duties Include:
Responsible for maintaining the tangible capital assets database, including the recording of all journal entries and database entries with respect to tangible capital assets acquisitions, construction, disposals, write-downs and amortization. Provide asset information to departments for budget estimation purposes.
Responsible for adjusting journal entries to ensure that assets are recorded in the correct account for the annual amortization amounts. Receive assets information from departments to reconcile tangible capital asset subledger.
Responsible for recording capital project costs for all constructed capital assets.
Prepare fixed assets register and amortization schedules.
Complete tangible capital assets schedules for Provincial reporting.
Reconcile tangible capital asset schedules to general and subledger and other related registers and databases, such as dTims and GIS and insurance fixed assets registers and schedules.
Provide recommendations to the Supervisor and Manager of the software needs and products to improve efficiency of the tangible capital assets process.
Recommend updates and changes to the tangible capital assets policy.
Provide backup support to the Accountant I and Accounting Clerk III.
Perform other similar and related duties as required.
Position Requirements:
Three (3) year College Diploma in Accounting or Business/Commerce with a focus in Accounting.
One (1) year experience in accounting practices with a focus on tangible capital assets.
Knowledge of municipal legislation and relevant statues.
Previous experience with recording municipal assets is preferred.
Knowledge and experience with accounting systems for tangible capital assets is preferred.
Advanced proficiency in MS Excel and a willingness and ability to learn and apply new technology as it relates to financial software and systems.
Ability to work and act independently and in a team environment, as well as manage multiple assignments and operate within tight time restrictions.
Proven completion of Ministry of Labour Worker Health and Safety Awareness training.
A demonstrated commitment to enhancing a safety culture.
CUPE 157 Pay Group 6 - Minimum $55,578 annually; Maximum $61,733 annually
Expected Work Location: City Hall, 50 Church Street St. Catharines
Hours of Work: Currently Monday-Friday 8:30am - 4:30pm
