About the First Nation, Métis and Inuit Mental Health (FNMI) Services Program
You will provide trauma-informed, culturally safe, holistic mental health care to Indigenous children, teens and their families from partner First Nation and Métis communities. Families can access mental health services right within their rural community or at any CASA Mental Health location.

About the Role
Reporting to the Manager, Clinical, the Mental Health Therapist works as part of an interprofessional team to provide culturally appropriate, Indigenous-informed mental health assessment and treatment to Indigenous children, adolescents and families.

The Mental Health Therapist works within the First Nation, Métis and Inuit Services program. They integrate traditional Indigenous wellness practices and worldviews into therapeutic care while collaborating closely with community providers, Elders, Knowledge Keepers and CASA’s Indigenous Wellness Support Services team. The Mental Health Therapist follows professional standards and applies evidence-informed practices to support positive outcomes for children and families.

The Mental Health Therapist will:
  • Conduct comprehensive mental health assessments of preschoolers, children and adolescents, and develop treatment plans and diagnoses using the DSM-5 and other appropriate tools.
  • Provide holistic, developmentally appropriate, trauma-informed and Indigenous-informed therapeutic interventions, incorporating traditional Indigenous wellness practices and worldviews.
  • Make appropriate referrals and support diagnostic clarification and treatment planning.
  • Collaborate with community service providers, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, management and CASA’s Indigenous Wellness Support Services team to ensure culturally appropriate and Indigenous-informed care.
  • Participate actively in interprofessional clinical processes, including intake, assessment, triage, treatment, case review, discharge and consultation.
  • Provide guidance and supervision to Therapy Support Navigators in delivering therapeutic interventions.
  • Manage cases by coordinating case conferences and collaborating with professionals across education, social services, justice and health.
  • Facilitate psychoeducational and therapeutic groups for children and caregivers and advocate for children and families as needed.
  • Maintain accurate health records and follow agency policies and practices related to admission, discharge and data collection.
  • Provide clinical coverage across Indigenous Services programs as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated commitment to clinical excellence, culturally safe practice and evidence-informed care.
  • Strong assessment, treatment, case management, critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience supporting children, adolescents and families, particularly those impacted by trauma; CFS experience is an asset.
  • Knowledge and experience with therapeutic modalities such as CBT, solution-focused therapy, crisis intervention, narrative therapy and EFT. Play therapy and DBT training are assets.
  • Experience supporting LGBTQ2S+ children and youth and working within interprofessional teams to develop holistic care plans.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work independently, prioritize tasks and adapt to changing situations.
  • Understanding of Indigenous history, systemic barriers, intergenerational trauma and the impacts of colonization is an asset.
  • Willingness to learn about and participate in First Nation, Métis and Inuit cultures, traditional protocols, ceremonies, teachings and wellness practices.
  • Ability to build respectful, trusting relationships with community partners, service providers, staff, Elders and Knowledge Keepers.
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, collaboration and consensus-building.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio and Outlook.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Master’s degree in psychology, social work (with psycho-social intervention designation), occupational therapy or nursing.
  • A minimum of two years of clinical practice in child and family mental health or youth addictions.
  • Member in good standing with the Alberta College of Occupational Therapists (ACOT), Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW) or College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP).
  • Experience in cognitive behavioural therapy, family interventions and crisis intervention.
  • Training and experience in dialectical and theraplay or play behaviour therapy is an asset.
Conditions of Employment
  • A satisfactory Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Search. This would be the financial responsibility of the successful candidate.
  • A satisfactory Child Intervention Check.
  • Must maintain Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) certification (training provided by CASA) and be physically able to perform all interventions.
