Nuclear Systems Design Technologist

Position Overview At Kai Cao Inc. (KCI), we provide engineered service solutions to clients in the nuclear and industrial sectors. As a Nuclear Systems Design Technologist, you will be responsible for the design, testing, and field implementation of mechanical and electro-mechanical systems, including prototype equipment. This role involves working closely with internal design and assembly teams, project managers, and customer representatives to develop systems that meet complex process and operational requirements. You will lead the integration of mechanical and electro-mechanical components, with support from electrical, mechanical, and controls/software teams. The position has a focus on hands-on fieldwork at client sites, particularly nuclear power facilities.

Primary Responsibilities

• Contribute to the development and review of mechanical designs, drawings, and technical documentation.
• Develop a deep understanding of client systems and process requirements to support both design and field deployment.
• Participate in technical risk evaluations and assist in developing and validating design concepts through early testing.
• Attend and support design and technical review meetings with clients and vendors.
• Assist in the build, integration, and testing of equipment, including active support during on-site commissioning and troubleshooting.
• Conduct structured testing to ensure system compliance with performance requirements, both in-shop and at client sites.
• Prepare or contribute to documentation packages including installation procedures, verification plans, test reports, and user manuals.
• Serve as a technical field contact during deployments, offering hands-on support and problem resolution.
• Travel regularly to client facilities, including nuclear generating stations, to support system installation, commissioning, and service.

Additional Responsibilities

• Liaise with third-party vendors for component evaluation and system interfacing.
• Contribute to proposal development by helping define work scope and resource estimates.
• Support internal initiatives to streamline field practices, document control, and compliance workflows.
• Apply working knowledge of CSA B51 and CSA N285.0 to support design review and documentation preparation in accordance with regulatory expectations.
• Adhere to KCI's ISO 9001 quality standards and internal procedures for documentation, verification, and approval.
• Comply with all corporate policies and client site requirements, including ethical conduct and project safety standards.
• Follow all health and safety protocols, including work in radiological areas under Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW) designation where applicable.

Field Work and Safety Requirements

This role requires:

• Frequent travel to industrial and nuclear client sites for installation, commissioning, and service work.
• Working in controlled environments, including radiologically classified zones and power generation facilities.
• Flexibility to support scheduled outages, field testing, and short-notice deployments.
• Strict adherence to client-specific HSE policies, including PPE requirements, lockout/tagout procedures, and site-specific orientation.
• Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status.

Qualifications

Education Diploma in Mechanical, Mechatronics, or Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology or equivalent. Certification as a C.E.T. is preferred.

Experience Previous experience supporting equipment implementation in power or industrial facilities is preferred. Familiarity with system testing, troubleshooting, and working in regulated environments (especially nuclear) is valuable. Candidates should be adaptable, communicative, and capable of working both independently and within multi-disciplinary teams.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $25.00-$35.00 per hour

Expected hours: 36 - 44 per week
