Ferrovial Construction Canada Inc. and VINCI Construction Grands Projets are undertaking the design, build, and finance of the Ontario Line Southern Civil, Stations, and Tunnel (South Civil) package.

As Ontario Transit Group, we are now mobilizing our design and construction crews, with major works. The South Civil contract is anticipated to be completed in 2030.

The project will strengthen Ontario’s economy by supporting an estimated 1,500 jobs at the peak of construction.

What is the project?

• A six-kilometer tunnel and associated tunnelling works from Exhibition to Don Yard portal (west of the Don River).
• Stations:
  • One above-ground station to be integrated with the existing GO Transit Exhibition Station.
  • Two underground stations to be integrated with the existing TTC Osgoode and Queen subway stations.
  • Four new underground stations (King/Bathurst, Queen/Spadina, Moss Park, Corktown).

Job Description

Reporting directly to the Equipment Manager, the Deputy Equipment Manager will play a key role in overseeing fleet operations, equipment maintenance programs, procurement activities, regulatory compliance, and equipment utilization. Key Responsibilities: 

• Assist the Equipment Manager in the overall planning, coordination, and management of the company's construction equipment fleet, ensuring equipment availability aligns with operational and project requirements. 

• Oversee the allocation, mobilization, and deployment of equipment across multiple project sites to maximize utilization, productivity, and operational efficiency while minimizing downtime. 

• Coordinate and monitor preventive maintenance, inspections, repairs, and equipment servicing programs to ensure the reliability, safety, and performance of all fleet assets. 

• Collaborate with maintenance personnel, mechanics, manufacturers, and external service providers to ensure timely diagnosis and resolution of equipment issues and failures. 

• Monitor equipment operating costs, including fuel consumption, maintenance expenditures, repair costs, rentals, and lifecycle expenses, and identify opportunities for cost reduction and operational improvements. 

• Analyze fleet performance metrics and utilization data to support decision-making regarding equipment acquisition, redeployment, replacement, and disposal strategies. 

• Support equipment procurement activities, including equipment specification development, vendor evaluations, quotation reviews, negotiations, and commissioning of new assets. 

• Assist in managing equipment rental programs, ensuring the appropriate selection, utilization, and return of rented equipment while maintaining cost control. 

• Participate in long-term fleet planning, capital expenditure forecasting, and replacement strategies to ensure the fleet remains aligned with project demands and business objectives. 

• Work closely with project managers, construction managers, superintendents, and site teams to forecast equipment requirements and develop equipment deployment schedules that support project milestones. 

• Assist in developing, implementing, and continuously improving fleet management policies, procedures, standards, and best practices to enhance operational effectiveness and consistency across the organization. 

• Ensure all equipment operations comply with applicable health and safety regulations, Ministry of Labour requirements, environmental standards, manufacturer recommendations, and company policies. 

• Support compliance with regulatory inspections, certifications, permits, and licensing requirements for construction equipment, lifting devices, and mobile machinery. 

• Participate in equipment inspections, audits, condition assessments, and performance evaluations to ensure equipment remains safe, compliant, and fit for purpose. 

• Assist in the management and oversight of specialized equipment, including tower cranes, overhead cranes, hoisting systems, and other critical lifting equipment where applicable. 

• Support the investigation of equipment incidents, breakdowns, and failures by conducting root cause analyses and implementing corrective and preventive actions. 

• Review and approve equipment maintenance records, inspection reports, service documentation, and repair recommendations to ensure accuracy and compliance. 

• Utilize fleet management software, telematics systems, and equipment tracking platforms to monitor equipment location, utilization, maintenance status, operator performance, and productivity metrics. 

• Prepare and maintain detailed fleet reports, key performance indicators (KPIs), maintenance schedules, utilization reports, and cost analyses for management review. 

• Assist with the development and administration of annual operating budgets related to equipment maintenance, procurement, rentals, repairs, and capital investments. 

• Establish and maintain strong working relationships with equipment manufacturers, dealers, suppliers, service providers, and rental partners to support operational requirements and maximize service levels. 

• Provide technical expertise and guidance to project teams regarding equipment selection, capabilities, operating requirements, maintenance practices, and safety considerations. 

• Support training and mentoring initiatives for equipment coordinators, mechanics, operators, and field personnel to promote safe and efficient equipment operation and maintenance. 

• Participate in emergency response planning and provide support during critical equipment breakdowns or operational disruptions to minimize project impacts. 

• Act on behalf of the Equipment Manager during periods of absence, ensuring continuity of fleet operations, maintenance activities, and equipment management functions. 

Qualifications

• Minimum 10 years of progressive experience managing and supporting construction equipment fleets within the construction industry. 

• Technical diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering, Heavy Equipment Technology, Construction Management, or a related discipline is preferred. 

• Professional certifications related to equipment management, maintenance, or construction operations is a definite asset. 

• Strong understanding of heavy construction equipment maintenance, operations, and lifecycle management. 

• Knowledge of lifting operations, hoisting regulations, and crane maintenance practices (tower and overhead cranes) is a preferred asset. 

• Experience managing equipment utilization, maintenance scheduling, and fleet performance. 

• Proven ability to work effectively with project teams, maintenance personnel, vendors, and subcontractors. 

• Experience supporting major infrastructure, transit, industrial, or high-rise construction projects is preferred. 

• Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills. 

• Experience with fleet management software and equipment tracking systems. 

• Excellent problem-solving and decision-making capabilities. 

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
