POSITION SUMMARY

The Snc?wips Collections Manager, reporting to the Snc?wips Operations and Cultural Administrator, is responsible for administering, maintaining, and keeping all records related to collection items owned or on-loan to Westbank First Nation and the Snc?wips Heritage Museum according to best museum practices and the Snc?wips Museum Policy

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor's Degree in at least one of the following: Indigenous Studies, Anthropology, History, Education, Arts, Social Sciences, Cultural Studies required
• A combination of education and experience may be considered
• Participation in collections management related workshops including, but not limited to Past Perfect Accessioning and Caring for Artifacts in Aboriginal Institutions
• An equivalent combination of education & experience may be considered

REQUIREMENTS

• Certification in Collections Management required
• 2 years working experience and knowledge about Indigenous communities and organizations including hands-on experience in a museum setting
• Acceptable Criminal Record check required
• Maintains a high level of confidentiality and uses discretion on all matters relating to the affairs of the Westbank First Nation.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILTIES

• Maintains records of accession, condition acquisitions, ownership, loaning, and disposal of all WFN collections; Maintains a record of the location of WFN collections
• Maintains and records movement of WFN collection items; Conducts consistent condition reports of all WFN collection items.
• Makes recommendations to ensure care is being provided to all items according to best museum practices
• Maintains and works to build the museum Reference Library, Archives and Sensitive Materials collections
• Assists with museum administrative duties, including but not limited to: answering phones, ordering supplies, public relations, and keeping an organized workspace, etc.
• Works with museum staff, WFN Records Management department staff, and graphic designers in assembling the museum catalogue
• Participates in Museum programs that will promote the mission and vision of the museum
• Maintains best museum practices in regards to display and installation, storage of items, preservation, and transportation to conform to insurance regulations
• Assesses all risk management in determining possible concerns regarding the management of WFN collection items including, but not limited to: vandalism, theft, pests, emergencies, and natural disasters
• Assists in the creation of a disaster management policy to safeguard both staff and collection items
• Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with colleagues at the museum and throughout the WFN organization and other museum professionals
• Observes unpacking of collection items to ensure damage or deterioration to objects has not occurred
• Prepares acquisition reports for Scn?wips Operations and Cultural Administrator review
• Reviews and evaluates registration and catalogue system
• Recommends changes in recordkeeping to achieve maximum accessibility to and efficient retrieval of collection objects
• Assists in the creation of exhibits both within the museum and for special events
• Provides research assistance for staff and museum clientele utilizing best research practices
• Assists in installing collections and artwork for exhibition.
• Develops and co-ordinates exhibitions including research, design, production, marketing, and evaluation in collaboration with other Sncewips staff
• Assists with preparation and maintenance of policy, operations, and training manuals as related to collections
• Advises and resolves customer concerns in response to written, verbal, and in-person enquiries.
• Performs routine office and administrative tasks of the Sncewips Heritage Museum
• Investigates, develops, and implements process improvements
• Assists in representing Sncewips in all matters related to the museum
• Assists in all other areas as directed by the Sncewips Operations and Cultural Administrator
• Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Westbank First Nation policies, standards and procedures, and as directed by the Snc?wips Operations and Cultural Administrator

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

• In-depth knowledge of Westbank First Nation and Syilx history and culture
• Demonstrated success in building cross-cultural partnerships
• Knowledge of museum and administration software and databases, including but not limited to CatalogueIT, Past Perfect, Microsoft Office, and Photoshop
• Full understanding of archival management for collection records and digital assets
• Familiarity with fine arts insurance policies, Transportation Security Administration Regulations, education, heritage, and culture, as well as best museum practices including all related legal requirements
• Familiarity with and an understanding of Okanagan/Syilx protocols regarding the handling and care of culturally sensitive collection items
• Excellent communication and organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail and commitment to efficiency
• Ability to serve as a Snc?wips Heritage Museum representative and work a flexible schedule
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues at the museum and throughout the WFN organization and other museum professionals
• Interest in the following areas: Anthropology, Archaeology, Art, Cultural Studies, History, Indigenous Studies, Museums, and Archives
• Solution orientated, understands assignment needs and requirements, anticipates, and solves problems

The minimum starting salary for this position is: $51,802
