Job Summary

Are you interested in a career in mental health dietetics helping patients with nutritional support needs? An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic HCPC Registered Dietitian with good communication and team-working skills. You will be providing an excellent dietetic service via 1:1 assessments and group work on inpatient mental health wards for adults/older adults. This is conjunction with, working in a friendly team to provide dietetic advice to older adults in care homes. Ideally you will have some experience in mental health settings, but it is not compulsory, as support and training can be provided.

This is a great opportunity for you to further your career by joining our supportive team and continuing to develop within this role. The post provides an interesting variety of inpatient and community work, and is located in Calderdale (Halifax and surrounding areas), in West Yorkshire.

Main duties of the job

You Will

Provide a Dietetic service to people admitted to mental health wards and also where required to a Mental Health Rehabilitation unit in Halifax.

Provide Dietetic assessments for older people living in the community under the Care Home Liaison Mental Health Team in Halifax.

Be fully involved in and supported by the MDT (medics, nursing, catering, AHPs), e.g. attending professionals meetings/ward rounds to enable the provision of the best holistic care for the service user. There is a strong MDT approach in both inpatient and community settings

Contribute to student training programme as one of our student placement supervisors, (shared role). Our service offers training for A, B and C placements, which receive excellent feedback

Have the opportunity to lead upon and contribute to audits and nutrition training for staff led by our Dietitians Network. This will help ensure compliance with our clinical governance framework, you will motivate colleagues, champion service user safety and dignity and drive continuous improvement.

There are Dietetic clinical supervision groups that can support you, and you will benefit from the professional leadership within our Dietitians Network. Our network has an emphasis on evidence-based and innovative practice.

The post is fully agile so a laptop/mobile phone will be provided for work use.

Job responsibilities

JOB SUMMARY

To establish a clinical caseload within an agreed service area that is responsive to patient needs and Trust expectations.

To provide specialist nutrition assessment and care plans for service users .

To support the implementation of the Trust Food and Nutrition Policies.

To contribute in the update and implementation of service standards, policies and procedures.

To participate in the monitoring of service performance through regular audit.

To supervise and support junior colleagues.

To participate in training of dietetic students and health care professionals in specified areas of nutrition and dietetics.

To be actively involved in continuing professional development.

This job description is an outline of the main duties of the post. The postholder will be required to undertake other duties commensurate with the grade as directed.

KEY RESULT AREAS

Clinical

  • To be responsible for the specialist assessment and care planning of the nutritional needs of service users.

2 To provide evidence based dietetic intervention and monitor outcome, working within the Health Professional Council (HPC) Standards of Conduct and British Dietetic Association (BDA) Professional Standards.

  • To participate in the care programme approach, case conferences, MDT meetings and ward rounds. Providing specialist nutritional advice and appropriate nutrition care plans.
  • To assess learning needs, barriers and educational ability of service users and carers in order to provide suitable nutrition education resources.
  • To promote and participate in multi-disciplinary team working, to facilitate recovery and healthy lifestyle choices in independent or supported living settings.
  • To participate in the development and evaluation of nutrition and dietetic resources ensuring that the information is current and consistent with the diverse needs of service users, carers and staff.
  • To communicate with service users and carers using the most appropriate verbal and non-verbal methods, which respect their views, autonomy and culture.
  • To seek service user/carer involvement in care planning and obtain feedback on service delivery.
  • To contribute to the achievement of CQC Fundament Standards of Care.
  • To maintain complete, accurate and defensible clinical records commensurate with the policies and standards of the Trust, Nutrition & Dietetic Service and Dietetic profession.
  • To record daily activity using the Trusts IT network (RIO) maintaining Caldicott principles to ensure data security.
  • To participate in clinical supervision at both uni and multi-professional level.
  • To accompany the SOAD (Second Opinion Doctor) for purposes of mental health assessments and treatment, when requested.
