Assistant Supervisor Track Maintenance-CA

Job Summary

The incumbent is responsible for leading the operations of an assigned territory that involves track inspection and repairs. The role oversees replacing rails, ties, switches, and ballasts. In addition, the position provides daily support to the Track Supervisor.

Main Responsibilities

• Lead engineering operations as outlined in CN's operating plan
• Supervise and lead activities of track gangs, track employees, and hi-rail operations
• Manage engineering operations to ensure compliance with safe work procedures, Transport Canada guidelines, and CN standards, policies, and regulations
• Lead people with clear direction and goals while providing coaching and guidance to employees through regular performance monitoring
• Apply collective agreements and company policies by conducting investigations, recommending corrective actions, and responding to grievances
• Oversee budgets and workforce productivity in accordance with CN policies and the Five Guiding Principles
• Communicate track conditions and daily production information clearly to senior management to facilitate operational adjustments
• Ensure track safety through regulatory inspections and input findings into the Track Inspection System (TIS) to monitor track condition
• Follow up on reported track issues to ensure ongoing compliance with standards
• Participate in derailment and service disruption activities, collaborating with Transportation and Mechanical to establish cause and prevent future occurrences
• Perform safety audits and conduct safety engagements for the unionized workforce
• Plan, schedule, and perform track repairs and maintenance
• Respond to emergencies

Working Conditions

The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular work week from Sunday to Thursday or Tuesday to Saturday and is eligible to participate in CN's hybrid work model. The role requires regular travel (up to 50%) across their assigned territory, at times without advance notice. The role involves managing priorities and delivering work within established timelines, with support from the team to ensure sustainable and effective workload management. The position requires responding to unexpected and emergency situations, and being able to lift up to 70 lbs.

Experience

Safety Compliance

• Between 3 to 5 years of experience in safety compliance
• Experience in troubleshooting and problem solving
• Relevant work experience in similar working conditions or in a regulatory or safety environment*
• Experience in budget management*
• Experience in labour relations (i.e., interpretation of collective agreements, response to grievances, negotiations with union representatives, discipline, etc.)*
• Experience supervising a unionized workforce*
• Candidates with an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered

Education/Certification/Designation

• High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED)
• Bachelor's Degree*
• Valid Driver's Licence
• Certification in Railroad Operating Signals*
• Candidates with equivalent practical experience, education, or training will be considered
