Privacy Counsel

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Privacy Counsel based in Canada. This role offers the opportunity to help shape privacy and data protection practices across a rapidly evolving digital commerce environment. You will provide practical legal guidance across e-commerce, advertising, health, AI, data governance, and product development initiatives. Working closely with product, engineering, data science, advertising, and business teams, you will help embed privacy considerations into projects from the outset. The position combines strategic legal counseling with hands-on support for complex data use and regulatory matters. You will monitor global privacy developments and translate changing requirements into clear, actionable guidance. Your work will help build a scalable privacy program that enables innovation while supporting responsible and compliant data practices. Accountabilities: - Monitor global privacy and data protection developments, including regulatory and enforcement trends, and translate them into practical guidance for business stakeholders. - Advise product, engineering, data science, advertising, health, and business development teams on privacy requirements throughout the design and development lifecycle. - Support privacy-by-design practices for new products and initiatives across e-commerce, advertising, health, and AI-driven offerings. - Advise on advertising-related privacy matters, including data use, audience targeting, measurement, consent, and appropriate restrictions on sensitive information. - Review and help structure data-sharing arrangements involving retail partners, advertisers, vendors, and subsidiaries. - Provide legal guidance on Data Processing Agreements, Business Associate Agreements, and international data transfer mechanisms, including Standard Contractual Clauses and the Data Privacy Framework. - Support Privacy Risk Assessments and Data Protection Impact Assessments and help strengthen related intake, documentation, and review processes. - Develop practical privacy guidance, templates, playbooks, training materials, and other resources that make privacy requirements easier for teams across the organization to understand and apply. - Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to identify privacy risks early, establish appropriate controls, and support compliant business decisions.

- Contribute to the continued development and scalability of the global privacy program as regulatory requirements and business activities evolve. Requirements: - J. D. from a top-tier law school and membership in at least one U. S. state bar, with California bar membership required or the ability to register as in-house counsel. - 6+ years of professional experience focused on privacy and data protection, gained in a leading law firm, in-house legal team, or a combination of both. - Deep working knowledge of the CCPA, GDPR, HIPAA, and evolving U. S. state privacy and health data laws. - Demonstrated experience advising on adtech, data sharing, and consumer data use within retail, e-commerce, technology, platform, or similarly complex environments. - Strong ability to interpret complex privacy and data protection requirements and translate them into clear, practical, business-oriented guidance for non-legal stakeholders. - Experience working cross-functionally with product, engineering, data, advertising, and business teams. - Strong understanding of privacy governance, data-sharing arrangements, consent requirements, and cross-border data transfer considerations. - Experience supporting privacy assessments, documentation, policies, procedures, and scalable privacy program operations. - Experience with AI governance and privacy-by-design principles in machine learning or AI product development is preferred.
