Basic Function
Petro-Canada Lubricants Inc. (PCLI), an HF Sinclair company, is seeking a full-time Rotating Equipment Specialist for our Reliability Department. Reporting to the Team Leader of Mechanical Reliability, the Rotating Equipment Specialist ensures that the Mechanical Integrity management programs (MI') for rotating equipment are executed safely and effectively. The outcome being that all rotating equipment on site consistently operates without unexpected failure. The role is directly involved in day-to-day and long-term proactive monitoring and troubleshooting of assets within a multi-disciplinary environment.
The Rotating Equipment Specialist is a highly proficient, technical SME who acts as the primary site contact for mechanical related matters, using their knowledge, expertise and familiarity of craft principles to advise the PCLI organization. This role is ultimately accountable for making critical decisions that directly impact business risk and bottom line.
Primary stakeholders for this position include the Operations Area Teams (CFTs), Unit Reliability Engineers, Inspectors, Industrial Mechanics, Maintenance Coordinators, Plant Vibration Technicians, and Operations Coordinators. Key supporting roles include Instrument and Electrical specialists, Technical Services Engineers and Production Operators.
Job Duties
- Assess condition of online equipment for suitability of continued safe and reliable operation
- Regularly monitor critical assets and understand failure cause(s) in consultation with stakeholders
- Work with unit Reliability Engineers to identify corrective actions and develop equipment scope of repair following failures; report through SAP and other channels and help prioritize against competing work
- Lead or support Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) for events impacting mechanical asset reliability or asset failures themselves; provide recommendations for improvement and support corrective actions
- Support planning and execution of corrective maintenance repairs; shop / field inspections and guidance
- Steward performance of predictive/preventative programs for assets through KPI tracking and reporting
- Support continuous improvement through validation of existing and creation of new Mechanical Integrity documents
- Lead the development and implementation of asset strategies, including identification of spare parts, routine maintenance activities, long-term upgrades, obsolescence planning
- Actively manage the sites' Vibration Monitoring Program, including ownership and sustainment of a Work Instruction that outlines key equipment monitoring requirements; use of data acquisition tools and analysis infrastructure, vibration assessment criteria, training, etc.
- Lead bad actor identification and improvement initiatives; identify and communicate successes, challenges and future plans
- Lead the identification, planning, budgeting and implementation of reliability improvement initiatives (MRIM)
- Produce or support the development of Management of Change (MOC) documents for proposed Maintenance changes
- Ensure sustainment of asset Master Data; update Materials, Equipment and BOMs in SAP database
- Support Turnaround/Outage scope development, planning and execution (i.e. identify key proactive asset repairs that deliver the expected level of reliability, provide shutdown QA/QC support for equipment scope of work, start-up support)
- Contribute to the preparation of annual maintenance/expense/capital budgets and Long-Range Plan (LRP)
- Provide reliability input into capital project design; complete Green Table reviews of Front-End (FEED) and Detailed Engineering documents
- Provide reliability input for Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) reviews
Special assignments or tasks assigned to the employee by their supervisor, as determined from time to time in their sole and complete discretion
Experience
- Minimum 10 years related work experience overseeing a variety of rotating equipment operation and repairs
- Experience in a refinery and/or Oil & Gas (Lubricants) production environment is an asset
- Knowledge of developing asset strategies, PM programs and sparing philosophy for rotating equipment is preferred
- Critical Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) techniques are an asset
- Hands-on work including direct supervision of millwrights on rotating equipment maintenance is also an asset
Education Level
- Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering, OR
- Technologist Diploma in related mechanical field with additional years of relevant experience, or Millwright Trade Certificate (Industrial / Construction) with additional years of relevant experience
Required Skills
- Health and Safety mindset; in-depth knowledge of industry safety standards and procedures; working knowledge of the OH&SA and Regulations ( Green Book' )
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and relationship building skills; mentorship of others
- Ability to learn new skills quickly, multi-task, organize work and prioritize efficiently
- Strong understanding of working principals of compressors, pumps, steam turbines, fans, blowers and other industrial rotating equipment, with emphasis on centrifugal and reciprocating machinery
- Vast knowledge of typical rotating equipment components; understanding of engineered drawings, performance curves and specifications
- Firm grasp of common reliability and maintenance practices; lubrication systems, vibration monitoring, equipment alignments, etc.
- Breadth of expertise in relevant industry standards and recommended practices, including but not limited to API 610, 674, 617, 618, 611, 612, 682, etc.
- Robust analytical and investigative skills (troubleshooting) to develop repair scopes and make sound recommendations for complex failures and events
- Confidence to make critical decisions independently and ownership to stand behind those decisions
- Experience with assessing failure probability using Risk Assessment and Prioritization based tools (Risk Matrix, etc.)
- Computer savvy, with experience in Microsoft Office Applications (i.e. Excel, Word, PowerPoint
- General understanding of Refining Operations is an asset
- Intermediate working knowledge of SAP, including maintenance management systems and workflow
- Functional Location, Material Master, Bill of Material
- Notifications, Work Orders, Purchase Orders
- Static codes and standards regulating the Oil & Gas industry, including Technical Standards and Safety Act (TSSA), CSA B51, ASME Piping & Vessel Codes, API Inspection Codes, etc. an asset
Supervisory/Managerial Responsibility
- Indirect supervision of Plant Vibration Technicians
- Indirect supervision of Industrial Mechanics on-floor completing equipment repairs
Work Conditions
- High degree of activity - high stress when addressing significant incident and emergency activities
- Pressure from CFT's to handle multiple competing priorities for support
- Approximate 60%/20%/20% office/shop/plant split
- Shift-work may be required during times of planned maintenance turnarounds (approx. every 2 years)
- Extended hours may be required when business requirements dictate
- Available to be on call periodically as part of emergency response support team
Physical Requirements
- Physically able to climb ladders, lift or carry equipment weighing up to 25 pounds and make visual inspections
- Job conditions may require twisting, stooping, crouching, kneeling, reaching or grasping, and working in confined spaces as permitted
- While wearing appropriate personal protective equipment, incumbent will enter areas with chemical, physical, and biological hazards
