Radiation Safety Specialist
Safety Resources, a unit with Human Resources, is the OHS, research safety, and hazardous waste group for USask. Safety Resources supports the safety of our students, staff, and faculty through compliance initiatives and the provision of policy and standards for implementation of the safety management system at the college and unit level.
Primary Purpose: The radiation safety specialist develops, implements, and continuously improves radiation safety programs to align with regulatory requirements and institutional leading practices. This role provides technical expertise, practical assistance, and training to the university community where nuclear substances and radiation devices are used. The specialist executes key components of the radiation safety program as delegated. This position also participates in emergency preparedness efforts, contributes to the lab safety programs, and serves as a resource to safety committees and stakeholders.
The primary focus and work location of this position is the Sylvia Fedoruk Canadian Centre for Nuclear Innovation (Fedoruk Centre) but the specialist will contribute to both research safety and OHS programs across USask research and operations.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Develops and administers radiation safety programs, services, and initiatives that support the safe and responsible use of nuclear substances, radiation devices, and Class II prescribed equipment
- Provides technical expertise as well as accurate and timely advice to the university community in support of compliance and leading practices in radiation safety
- Provides back up and coverage in acting as the designated radiation safety officer
- Monitors, assesses, and makes recommendations regarding conditions on campus to support effective management of radiation and associated hazards, and appropriate risk management
- Develops and delivers effective training that engages and promotes leading practices in radiation safety
- Participates in and supports emergency preparedness and response activities and initiatives to protect people, property, and the environment
- Performs routine compliance activities such as swipe testing, quality control of radiation meters, and verification of safety systems
- Develops and maintains positive relationships with stakeholders to effectively support health, safety, and environmental needs and requirements
- Assists in the collection, processing and disposal of radioactive waste, including animal, chemical, and biohazardous radioactive waste
- Promotes compliance with health, safety, and environmental requirements, work practices, and procedures as prescribed by the university and pursuant to applicable legislation
- Communicates and acts in a respectful and professional manner, collaborates effectively, abides by policy, and contributes to a positive and productive work and learning environment
- Engages in continuous learning by participating in activities, training, and events related to Indigenous engagement, reconciliation, equity, diversity, and inclusion
- Demonstrates respect and dignity for all members of the community, actively contributes to an environment of acceptance and inclusion of others, and responds to different perspectives from a place of curiosity, respect, and non-judgement

Education
A bachelor’s degree in physical or natural sciences, nuclear medicine, or a related field.
Experience
Minimum three years of relevant work experience including experience in an accelerator facility
Skills
- Working knowledge of occupational health, safety, and environmental protection, radiation safety, and the transportation of dangerous goods
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with stakeholders
- Ability to influence stakeholders to adopt and champion a safety culture
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities
- Sound judgement and discretion in handling complex and sensitive information
- Strong planning and organizational skills including managing competing priorities
- Availability for on-call duties during emergency situations
- Proficient technology skills, including Microsoft Office applications
- Ability to perform moderate physical tasks in the lifting and handling of equipment and materials

Salary: The salary range, based on 1.0 FTE, is $69,035.00 - 107,868.00 per annum. The starting salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
