Position Summary
Do you have a passion for nursing? We have the position for you! We are seeking a motivated Registered Nurse with a dedication for delivering compassionate patient care to join our team at Northern Health.
In accordance with the established mission, vision, values, and strategic priorities of Northern Health, and under the general supervision of Manager or designate, and in accordance with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) standards of practice, as a member of a multi-disciplinary care team that provides youth and their families with mental health and substance use treatment and supports, the Registered Nurse) works as a therapist and case manager to provide clinical services to youth in the Youth Short Term Assessment and Response (Y-STAR) Program, including assessment, planning, treatment, consultation and follow-up. This position will work in settings where contact with youth at risk can best be established, e.g., street-based, school, and community settings. Providing mental health and substance use services where the focus is maintaining clients in the community as well as enhancing youth treatment and rehabilitation plans through regular and supportive contact. Works in partnership with youth and caregivers, as well as facility managers and staff of relevant community agencies. Participates in planning, program development, policy recommendations, and research and evaluation. Provides community mental health and substance use education.
A first in Canada: minimum Nurse-to-Patient Ratios (mNPRs) are starting in B.C.! Northern Health, alongside B.C.'s other health authorities, is implementing mNPRs as a transformative staffing initiative that aims to improve the working environment of nurses in order to provide better quality care to our patients.
Qualifications
- Graduation from an approved School of Nursing and current practicing registration as a RN with BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM)
- Two years' recent, related experience in a community or hospital psychiatric setting, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certificate level C.
- Valid BC Driver's license - and access to personal vehicle if required, with appropriate business insurance coverage.
Skills and Abilities
- Assessment and Intervention – Demonstrated ability to complete initial and ongoing client assessments (clinical and diagnostic reasoning) and provide nursing care through appropriate/ prescribed technical, therapeutic, safety type interventions.
- Communication – Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with the clients, families, the public, medical staff and the members of the interdisciplinary team using verbal, written and computer communication means.
- Critical Thinking – Demonstrated ability to integrate and evaluate pertinent data (from multiple sources) to problem-solve effectively.
- Human Caring and Relationship Centered Practice – Ability to promote client-focused care that demonstrates care for and with clients and significant others, sensitive to diverse cultures and preferences, client advocacy and social justice concerns.
- Teaching – Ability to transmit information intended to instruct clients and others about topics essential to health care and well-being.
- Management – Manages time and resources, implementing activities to promote cooperation among relevant others, collaboration across disciplines and related activities.
- Leadership – Promotes staff morale, cooperation, assertiveness and risk-taking, creative planning for change and innovations, implementation of NH policies or other protocols, and ongoing professional development of self.
- Knowledge Integration – Using factual information, prior learning and basic principles and procedures to support decisions and actions with relevant research-based evidence. Integrates best practice from nursing and health-related disciplines and the humanities, arts and sciences disciplines into professional practice.
- Ability to operate related equipment including relevant computer applications.
- Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
