Sr Facilities Design Engineer

Job Responsibility:

Provide Design subject-matter expertise and leadership regarding material handling equipment solutions and related facility design topics and activities related to the Facilities, Operations, and supply chain. The incumbent will also be required to lead end to end projects.

End to End Project Management (60%)

• Leads and manages projects within the closed-door facilities, including Designing, project planning, resource allocation, and communication with all stake holders to ensure the efficient and safe delivery of project requirements
• Leads projects with minimal supervision, demonstrating high degree of ownership, responsibility, and independent judgement
• Assists in Capital Budget Creation
• Effective Contractors management and follow-up to ensure timely and on-budget delivery of Project requirements (Scope, payment schedule, timelines, design quality)
• Tracks the Projects progress in alignment with the Project forecast to ensure that the projects are delivered on assigned schedule and budget
• Uses TMS, Project tracker, MS Project, and other Organizational process assets to effectively control and monitor project progress
• Capital project planning and responsible for assigned rollouts, work back schedules - projects often more than 100K with multiple trades and complex coordination requiring mechanical and electrical aptitude is required
• Follows all the applicable municipality bylaws, permit requirements, and landlord requirements in carrying out the projects
• Understanding of Provincial & Municipal Building, Electrical & Plumbing codes, Municipal Health codes, and Provincial Health and Safety code requirements to ensure Projects are completed correctly and safely while no violations exist at any given time.
• Demonstrates leadership in safety. Observes and enforces safety rules and regulations, encourages safe work behaviors, and promptly corrects conditions and unsafe behaviors which may lead to accidents. Collaborates with H&S Leadership to implement and uphold safety protocols and procedures
• Ensures the execution of Policies and Procedures for the Facility Function and ensure team adherence to these established policies, goals, and procedures; consequently, exercising a high degree of initiative and independent judgment
Ensures that the Project Initialization, planning, execution, Monitoring, and control and project closures are carried out by effective application of integration management, Scope Management, schedule Management, Cost Management, Project Quality management, resource management, communications management, risk management, procurement management and stake holder management

Engineering Design and Improvements (30%)

• Conducts / reviews data analysis- participates in site visits and collaborates with Operations and supply chain teams to develop and implement site-specific improvement recommendations
• Leads the execution of assigned plans, including material handling, changes, and equipment adjustments / upgrades. Provide additional in-depth analysis as required to justify recommendations
• Partners with Process Excellence and other cross-functional resources to drive network-wide rollout of “Quick Wins” and replications
• Supports the maintenance improvement and other initiatives across the breadth of organization
• Develops / improves processes, tools, budget / staffing suggestions and other recommendations
• Supports in other areas as required by business needs
• Execution & completion of special projects or duties as assigned
• Creative thinking and work with team to create new and innovative, FS programs and processes that will continue meet the needs of our growing business
• Responsible for developing, acquiring, and keeping the record of engineering documents, drawings and PSRs

Health and Safety

Keeps abreast of safety regulations and ensure that all projects, designs, and other initiatives are c arried out in compliance with the applicable regulations.

Physical Demands

• Emergency duty for after-hours equipment/building needs
• Required to travel between Staples sites in own vehicle
• Required to stand, walk, site crouch, bend, kneel, climb ladders, reach, and work with hands above head height.
• This role involves travel through Canada.

Recommended Qualifications

• Engineering Degree in Mechanical, industrial, mechatronics or any other mechanical specialization.
• Minimum 5 years relevant maintenance experience including progressive supervisory.
• Demonstrate experience in planning, scheduling and coordinating work activities.
• Project Management, Building Management, Millwright, Electrical, experience all strong assets.
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety practices necessary in the areas of assigned work.
• Must have working knowledge of conveyors, motors, PLC.
• Work done in a timely, workmanship-like and safe manner.
• Coordinates with associates as to not disrupt operations.
• Able to work independently on assigned tasks, as well as accept direction on given assignment.
• Leadership ability to direct and monitor the work of other maintenance technicians or trades.
• Must have valid driver's license and own vehicle, must provide a driver's abstract.
• Excellent time management, problem solving and communication skills.
• Mechanical aptitude, knowledge of hydraulics, electrical, pneumatics and ability to read and interpret drawings, maintenance procedures, and other print or electronic material to properly conduct required job tasks.
