Labour and Employment Associate (Montréal)

Position Overview

We are currently seeking a mid-level associate with experience in employment law to join our dynamic Pensions and Employment group with a flexible annual billable target. Torys’ Pensions and Employment Practice has broad expertise in pensions, executive compensation, employee benefits and employment matters in Canada and the United States.

Our clients span all industrial sectors and include public and private companies, investors, major financial institutions, including foreign and domestic banks, insurance companies, trust companies, investment funds and individuals.

Skills & Experience

The ideal candidate demonstrates:

• strong academic credentials;
• 3 to 6 years of experience in advising clients across all areas of labour and employment law, including in the context of corporate and commercial transaction;
• proven ability to advise clients across diverse industries on all facets of employment law, including recruitment, hiring practices, human rights, disciplinary matters, terminations, compensation disputes and restrictive covenants. This includes guidance on the interpretation and application of employment and labour legislation in the workplace, as well as support in drafting and implementing related documentation and practices.
• experience in advising clients on conflict resolution strategies that may lead to litigation, would be considered a valuable asset, though not required;
• sound judgment and a practical approach to legal problem-solving;
• capacity to manage multiple files and responsibilities concurrently;
• strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative mindset;
• ability to work independently and within a team to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment;
• clear and effective communication skills, including the ability to explain complex legal concepts in plain language;
• commitment to delivering practical advice that supports business innovation; and
• a client-focused approach and strong work ethic.

Applicants should be a member in good standing with the Barreau du Québec. Being a member of the Ontario Bar Association is considered a plus.
